US President Donald Trump stated that his initial conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was “highly fruitful,” despite the continuing trade dispute between these neighboring North American countries.

In a Truth Social posting, Trump stated that they would meet โ€œright awayโ€ following Canadaโ€™s impending election on April 28 to talk about โ€œpolitics, business, and every other aspect.โ€

The proposed 25% tariff on vehicles imported to the U.S., set to take effect next week, may have severe consequences for Canadaโ€™s automobile sector.

On Thursday night, Carney stated that the United States can no longer be considered a trustworthy trade ally, and he also mentioned that the U.S.-Canada relationship would henceforth inherently have a new dynamic.

The newly appointed prime minister, currently engaged in their election campaign, has not yet addressed the conversation with Trump.

Traditionally, shortly after taking office, Canadian leaders have considered reaching out to their U.S. counterparts as a key priority.

The conversation between Carney and Trump marks the first one since Carney assumed office on February 14th.

Aside from initiating a trade conflict with Canada due to tariff disputes, Trump has frequently advocated for Canada to join as the 51st U.S. stateโ€”a stance that has angered numerous Canadians.

Carney, who heads Canada’s Liberal Party, also stated that the crucial Canada-U.S. Auto Pact signed in 1965 has been “terminated” due to the imposed tariffs.

He likewise pledged to enforce counter-tariffs with “maximum impact” on the United States.
