Its purpose is to assist shoppers in comparing costs and making educated decisions.

Major
supermarkets in Singapore
will start showing individual item prices for chosen grocery products before the end of this year.

The trial initiative, spearheaded by the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) and the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS), seeks to assist consumers in making more transparent cost comparisons.

This new program set to launch later this year includes prominent supermarkets like NTUC FairPrice, Cold Storage, Giant, Sheng Siong, and Prime Supermarket. Certain locations throughout the region will start showing unit pricingโ€”such as price per liter or per kilogramโ€”in addition to regular retail costs for various common grocery items.

This initiative seeks to assist shoppers in making well-informed purchase choices by enhancing pricing clarity across various brands and package dimensions. The trial phase will focus primarily on essential items such as rice, meats, eggs, culinary oils, fruits, and veggies.

CCCS will also conduct a market survey during the pilot to gather feedback on the clarity and usefulness of the unit price displays. Insights from consumers will help improve the system before any wider implementation

Unit pricing enables customers to swiftly and effortlessly understand the actual costs,” stated CASE President Melvin Yong. “This method also serves as an effective means to tackle shrinkflation.

Alvin Koh, CEO of CCCS, remarked, “Implementing unit pricing enables customers to select items that offer greater cost efficiency, which can also motivate companies to vie with each other in providing more competitive rates to their clientele.”

FairPrice Group CEO Vipul Chawla stated that the pilot program aims to assist customers in making well-informed choices and obtaining greater value.

Moreover, Sheng Siong CEO Lim Hock Chee noted that displaying unit prices enhances transparency and assists customers in making their money go further.
