At least seven people were believed to have died in a deadly traffic accident that occurred on Saturday near the Dutse Tipper Garage Bus Stop in Abuja.

Witnesses portrayed the situation as gruesome, with twisted tricycles, broken windshields, and bloody possessions scattered throughout the hectic crossroads.

Sunday PUNCH
learned that the incident involved a heavy-duty truck and multiple commercial tricycles commonly referred to as Keke Napep.

Based on accounts from locals and people passing by, the truck allegedly experienced brake failure, causing it to lose control before crashing into the tricycles stationed at the bus stop for loading and unloading passengers.

“The truck was hurtling down from the hill and failed to halt. It crashed into the tricycles and mangled the occupants. Several people perished immediately,” stated an eyewitness.

The emergency response team, which included personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps and the National Emergency Management Agency, reached the location soon after the accident occurred. They collaborated with local helpers to transport the injured individuals to proximate medical facilities.

A video posted on Facebook and viewed by our reporter showed distorted corpses scattered at the crash site. Meanwhile, cries for help were audible as individuals desperately attempted to free those who remained ensnared within the twisted remains of the tricycles.

The large truck involved in the destruction was also observed lying on its side.

Although officials had not provided an official death toll by the publication deadline, several eyewitnesses reported that seven deceased individuals were retrieved from the debris.

It was reported that multiple people with injuries were transported to hospitals in Gwarinpa and Kubwa for treatment.

A representative from the FRSC, speaking anonymously because they were unauthorized to comment publicly, verified the occurrence to Sunday PUNCH. They also mentioned that an investigation has been initiated to determine the precise reason for the crash.

The Dutse Tipper Garage bus stop, regarded as a major traffic bottleneck in the Federal Capital Territory, has seen numerous crashes before, primarily because of its disorganized design and inadequate traffic management.
