On Monday, President John Dramani Mahama, who serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, administered oaths to members of the Armed Forces Council at the Defense Ministry in Accra. This council was set up according to Article 211 of the country’s 1992 Constitution.

Under the leadership of Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as chairperson, this council will provide advice to the president concerning policies related to defense and strategy. This includes guidance on the roles of the armed forces, management of military budgets and finances, administrative affairs, and the advancement of personnel beyond the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel or its comparable position.

The other members of the Council consist of Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, who serves as the Defence Minister; Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, holding the position of Foreign Minister; and Alhaji Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, acting as the Minister for the Interior.

The remaining individuals are Mr Daniel Addo, MrFuseini Idrisu, and Madam Nancy Dankwa Ampofo.

In his speech, President Mahama emphasized that this significant event underscored their shared dedication to ensuring the security, stability, and high standards of professionalism within the country’s military forces.

“Our military isn’t merely an essential component of our national security system; they safeguard our nation’s independence, defend our democratic values, and serve as a significant source of pride for the citizens of Ghana,” said President Mahama.

For many years, the Ghana Armed Forces have been recognized as a disciplined, professional, and greatly esteemed organization, receiving global acknowledgment for their commitment to peacekeeping operations, humanitarian aid, and safeguarding Ghana’s borders.

“He stated, ‘Whether it comes to maintaining tranquility within our neighborhoods or addressing safety risks throughout the region, your steadfast dedication and sacrifices remain evident.’”

Your service embodies the noblest principles of patriotism, duty, and honor, and for this, you have earned the deep admiration of both the government and the citizens of Ghana.

The President emphasized the essential function of the Armed Forces Council in overseeing and managing the military.

He said the responsibility placed on their shoulders as a Council was one of great national importance; adding that the strength of the nation’s Armed Forces depends not only on the bravery of the men and women in uniform, but also on the leadership policies and decisions that guide them.

He stated, ‘Your mission is straightforward: offer strategic guidance and supervision to ensure the Ghana Armed Forces stay effective, up-to-date, and well-disciplined.’

To maintain the utmost standards of leadership, expertise, and responsibility within the armed forces.

To protect the well-being of our personnel—both men and women who put their lives at stake for our country’s sake.

President Mahama stated that the choices made by the Council would mold the destiny of the country’s military forces.

He emphasized that it was crucial for them to tackle this responsibility with wisdom, integrity, and a strong dedication to serving their nation.

He stated that in today’s era, the landscape of security threats is swiftly changing—from terrorism and cybercrimes to political unrest and climate-induced security issues—areas where the Armed Forces need to be ready to react efficiently under all conditions.

He stated that this implies the government needs to allocate resources for essential equipment, education, and facilities to maintain a robust, flexible military that stays ahead of new challenges.

He stated that his administration was steadfast in its dedication to updating the Ghana Armed Forces.

He stated that the government would keep focusing on programs designed to build capacities, which improve the abilities and knowledge of public servants, making sure they are prepared for dealing with traditional as well as non-traditional challenges.

Others are investment in modern military technology and equipment to strengthen their national defense capabilities, enhanced infrastructure development, including improved barracks, training facilities and logistic support systems and improved welfare and support systems for military personnel and their families, recognizing that the well-being of the nation’s Armed Forces extends beyond the battlefield.

The President stated that the country’s military forces have made considerable contributions to maintaining peace both regionally and internationally, collaborating with allies worldwide to reinstate stability in numerous areas of conflict.

“Our dedication to collaborating on security within the region stays robust, and as a country, we will keep enhancing our relationships with organizations like ECOWAS and the African Union, along with our global partners, to jointly tackle security issues that impact not only Ghana but also the whole world,” stated President Mahama.

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang, speaking on behalf of the Council during her acceptance speech, conveyed their thanks to President Mahama for the honor bestowed upon them.

“I want to reassure him that as members of the council, we will embrace our responsibilities and guarantee that his trust is well-placed,” she stated.

I believe this is highly significant. As members of the Council, we commit ourselves to serving diligently, faithfully, and with great patriotism to rejuvenate Ghana and reform the Ghanaian Armed Forces. Our aim is to secure lasting peace and stability for our cherished country.

She emphasized the Council’s dedication to ensuring that the Ghana Armed Forces maintain, enhance, and possibly expand upon their global reputation.
