Secretary of Defense Pete showcased his physical prowess during a workout session with U.S. service members in the Philippines, where he labeled China as a threat and emphasized the importance of deterrence.

There has been a significant list of nations throughout history that have tried to challenge the United States’ determination,” Hegseth noted. “At present, we remain resolute in our commitment to collaborate with our allies.

‘Deterrence is necessary around the world, but specifically in this region, in your country, considering the threats from the communist Chinese,’ he said.

Hegseth, who is embarking on a regional tour that will also include a stop at

, called for joining with allies to counter Chinese expansionist threats โ€“ while trying to steer clear of the burgeoning scandal over the administration group chat where he shared information about an imminent attack on the Houthis in Yemen.

“What weโ€™re facing currently is decades of postponed upkeep and vulnerabilities that have weakened us,” Hegseth responded when asked if the U.S. plans to increase its conspicuous presence in the South China Sea. He added that they aim to restore power and deterrent capabilities across various regions worldwide.

He advocated for ‘peace through strength,’ stating that ‘it is indeed a genuine concept.’

During his visit, where he exercised alongside Navy SEALs at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on Tuesday, he delivered stern remarks โ€”
showing off a fresh tattoo during the reveal.

However, he dismissed inquiries regarding his accountability for the occurrences within the group conversation.

“I am accountable for making sure our division is fully prepared and capable of thwarting and overcoming potential adversaries. I must say, I feel a great sense of prideโ€”significant prideโ€”in the accomplishments of our units and CENTCOM during those first highly impactful and damaging assaults,” he stated.

He stated that his role involves collaborating with other cabinet members and making sure they are implementing strategies “in all feasible ways.” This was the sole mention of the security team conversation wherein he discussed details about weapon systems being utilized against the Houthis.

Hegseth had meetings with Philippines President Bongbong Marcos, participated in a joint press conference alongside Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., and observed an honor guard ceremony hosted by Philippine Army Chief of Staff Romeo Brawner Jr.

Previously, he informed Marcos that deterrence was especially necessary in the Indo-Pacific area due to the threats posed by Communist China.

This week, U.S. intelligence agencies released a report pinpointing China as the primary threat to the country.

Chinaโ€™s armed forces are deploying cutting-edge technologies such as hypersonic missiles, stealth planes, sophisticated submarines, enhanced capabilities in space and cyberspace, along with an expanded stockpile of weaponry.

China asserts nearly complete sovereignty over the South China Sea and has been cautioning against involvement from external nations, leading to conflicts with U.S. allies who advocate for unrestricted maritime passage.

To counter these moves, friends must stand shoulder to shoulder to prevent conflicts and guarantee free navigation, regardless of what one calls it, such as the South China Sea.

The sea, also known as the West Philippine Sea, according to Hegseth, was mentioned to Marcos.

Hegseth’s visit comes as legislators increasingly apply pressure due to the group chat controversy.

A federal judge has instructed those involved in the chat where journalist Jeffrey Goldberg was mistakenly included to keep all messages intact. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) cautioned in remarks to The Hill: “I’m not sure how many chances you receive. In baseball, you have three. Perhaps this counts for two,” he further stated. “Should such errors persist, we will address them when they occur. I am hopeful and expectant that this issue will be resolved.”

It wonโ€™t happen. It was just an unintentional occurrence – from Bondi to Foxcombe.
