Morocco has raised €2 billion ($2.2 billion) through the issuance of euro-denominated bonds, its first such transaction in half a decade. The funds will be used to support infrastructure and development initiatives connected to the 2030 FIFA World Cup, being jointly hosted with Spain and Portugal, as per a report from Bloomberg.

According to a source close to the transaction, as reported by Bloomberg, the issuance—which includes four-year and ten-year bonds—attracted investor interest totaling over €6.75 billion. This sale was increased by €500 million from the original plan, indicating robust market appetite.

The four-year bond was issued with a yield 155 basis points above mid-swaps, which is less than the initially anticipated 190 basis points. Meanwhile, the ten-year note was established at a rate 215 basis points higher than mid-swaps, similarly falling short of previous forecasts.

Morocco has historically tapped international debt markets to fund major projects and currently holds the highest non-investment grade rating from major credit agencies. The country raised $2.5 billion in debt last year, with its bonds gaining value in 2024.

Previously, Bloomberg reported that Morocco has engaged four major international investment firms—BNP Paribas, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, and JPMorgan—to oversee the bond offering. These financial institutions are collaborating with Morocco’s Treasury during a promotional tour aimed at attracting potential investors in both Paris and London.

The Moroccan authorities have designated Lazard as their sole financial consultant to guarantee that the bonds are designed effectively and will be favorably received by international investors.
