The tourism industry in Kenya has gotten a lift following the docking of a luxury Symphony Cruise ship carrying 600 passengers in Mombasa.

Their arrivals coincide with the nationโ€™s efforts to expand its tourist attractions, particularly boosting cruise tourism, which has seen increasing interest.

Cruise tourism serves as a significant economic catalyst not just within the realm of tourism but also offers substantial prospects for generating jobs, bolstering local businesses, and enhancing Kenyaโ€™s international profile as an essential travel destination,โ€ stated the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) in a release.

“Every cruise ship docking at Mombasa contributes to the economy through port services, guided tours, and passenger spending on local attractions, souvenirs, and hospitality.”

So far, KTB has created a Cruise Tourism Strategy aimed at establishing Kenya as a premier cruise location via an extensive plan. This strategy encompasses intensified marketing efforts, interaction with international cruise companies, and involvement in sector-specific gatherings like Seatrade Cruise Global.

The docking of Crystal Symphony underscores Kenyaโ€™s increasing allure in the international cruise industry. Promoting cruise travel is an essential part of our plan to broaden tourism options, generate economic prospects, and highlight Kenyaโ€™s tourist draws,โ€ stated KTB CEO June Chepkemei.

We continue to concentrate on enhancing our relationships with cruise companies and guaranteeing smooth journeys for passengers by working together collaboratively.

In the previous year, Kenya saw an increase in tourist arrivals to 2.5 million, compared to 1.9 million in 2023. The government aims to attract 7 million tourists by 2027, according to President William Ruto.

As a result, the sector generated revenues of Sh142.5 billion for the nation during the first half of this year, marking an increase from $1.06 billion in the corresponding period of the previous year, as reported by KTB.
