In October, the globally recognized Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra featuring Wynton Marsalis (JLCO) will embark on a historic trip to Ghana during their inaugural African tour. Between October 8 and 12, 2025, Accra will host this highly regarded jazz group along with an esteemed trumpeter at +233 Jazz Bar & Grill, one of the country’s top venues for live performances, for two extraordinary evenings of musical excellence on October 10 and 11.

The Accra performances are included in a significant four-country African tour led by Marsalis and the JLCO running from September 26 to October 11 this year. Additional nations featured on the itinerary include South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria. This marks the inaugural instance of the JLCO undertaking such an initiative throughout its 38 years of existence.

An American trumpet player, composer, educator, and musical leader named Marsalis comes from a lineage of musicians celebrated as the First Family of Jazz. He has been consistently praised as a skilled musician possessing an exquisite tone, broad range, outstanding clarity, exceptional mastery, a flawless sense of pitch, and full mental understanding of any music he performs.

The JLCO consists of outstanding group musicians, distinctive solo performers, writers, orchestrators, and teachers. With Marsalis at the helm, the orchestra presents an extensive range of music that includes obscure historical pieces as well as recently commissioned compositions, advancing the vocabulary of jazz while respecting its heritage.

Notable guests joining the Orchestra during their African tour are drummer Herlin Riley, percussionist Weedie Braimah, and singer Shenel Johns. Each of them is an outstanding performer, set to enhance the brilliance of the shows.

Africa is widely recognized as the origin of Jazz. The influence of African roots has inspired innovation among numerous jazz artists throughout history. A key part of the tour will feature a performance of a newly composed piece by Marsalis called ‘Afro!’, which deeply examines the connections between Jazz, Africa, and its global diaspora. In addition to the concert performances, the trip to Ghana will involve interactive sessions with local students and musicians, reinforcing the JLCOโ€™s commitment to promoting an appreciation for Jazz among people of all age groups around the world.

The Accra events will be organized by the Ghana Jazz Foundation along with the +233 Jazz Bar and Grill. The Ghana Jazz Foundation is an organization dedicated to advancing Jazz music and various traditional artistic expressions via partnerships, learning initiatives, and assistance to artists and performance spaces. +233 stands as Ghana’s leading live entertainment spot. It serves as a key meeting place for fans of Jazz and global music and has welcomed renowned performers from across the world.
