A large number of residences might be constructed at an airbase located in Cambridgeshire as per governmental strategies aimed at utilizing properties owned by the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The government stated it planned to deliver
the new homes
At Wyton, close to Huntingdon, as part of a fresh collaboration between the MoD and Homes England.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves stated: “For far too long, excess properties owned by the government have remained idle, yet they represent a significant unutilized asset that has the potential to generate prospects for future generations of homebuyers.”

Plans are underway to construct numerous housing units across various locations in North Yorkshire and Nottingham over the next few years.

Wyton has been under consideration for accommodation in past years.

In 2016, a scoping study was presented to the Huntingdonshire District Council, indicating potential for constructing numerous residences at the airfield site, along with facilities such as a care home and schools.

In 2019, another withdrawn planning proposal aimed to construct approximately 700 new residences, along with several retail spaces and a community center.

The most recent proposal involves designating the airfield as a potential development area within the district councilโ€™s updated local plan.

The application submitted during the agency’s request for site proposals indicated that approximately 4,500 residences could be constructed, along with additional amenities.

According to the government’s proposals, a portion of these residences will likely be designated for service members, their dependents, and former personnel.

Defence Secretary John Healey stated: “This marks the beginning of a pioneering strategy for utilizing public land, one that wonโ€™t result in an indiscriminate disposal of public resources. Instead, it signifies a comprehensive inter-departmental initiative aimed at eliminating obstacles, providing housing, and stimulating economic expansion.”
