The East African Community (EAC) member states plan to substantially decrease their expenses on medical supplies by combining resources to procure these goods collectively from manufacturers. “Upwards of 30%-45% of goods currently traded suffer from non-compliance issues; however, centralized acquisition procedures typically seal off entry points for unverified entries, thus securing top-notch yet economical treatment options,” remarked Karengera. He further stressed the necessity of autonomous capability regarding public welfare services amid declining foreign aid contributions following shifts in U.S. policy directions under recent administrations.
A research project undertaken last year by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) projected that each year, EAC nations spend approximately $2.67 billion on drugs alone. With successful execution of coordinated buying practices, potential savings might reach upwards of $1.15 billion yearly—a significant sum indeed.
Initially focusing on fifty frequently demanded therapeutic articles identified earlier this period based on data collected throughout fiscal years spanning between 2022 and early 2023, additional categories including antiretroviral therapies meant specifically for managing AIDS cases alongside pediatric treatments aimed towards maternal care and family planning needs have recently come onboard owing largely to evolving international cooperation frameworks impacting resource allocation strategies globally.
