The Catholic Archbishop of the Ibadan Archdiocese, Most Reverend Gabriel ‘Leke Abegunrin, has encouraged followers to utilize WhatsApp and other social media channels to share religious messages instead of fostering division among the community.

In his speech to the gathering at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Asipa, Ibadan, Archbishop Abegunrin stated, “While WhatsApp serves as an advantageous platform, one should exercise caution regarding their intake and dissemination of information because it has the potential to cause dissatisfaction.”

During his attendance at the 2025 iteration of the Oluyole Deanery Cathedraticum held last Wednesday, the archbishop shared these thoughts. He urged Christians, especially those who are Catholic, to contemplate how they use social media and consider what effects it might have on their relationships with others.

Approach content consumed on WhatsApp with caution. Although it serves as an effective medium for sharing information, it’s important to be mindful because misinformation has the potential to cause rifts within society, families, and even the Church.

“Refrain from sharing remarks that could misguide people within your household, church community, or work environment. Listen carefully, keeping the teachings of the Gospel in mind. Avoid spreading details or reports that you’re unsure of or that may lead to discord.”

He went on to say that when there is discord, “certain people or elements must be leading us astray,” and this does not align with the teachings of Christ.

To conclude, he offered his congratulations to the clergy and lay faithful from the 11 parishes within the Oluyole Deanery and expressed gratitude for their generous contributions.

Previously, during a sermon, Reverend Father Michael Domingo, who leads Sacred Heart College located on Akinyemi Way in Ibadan, urged Christians to consistently ask for God’s approval. He emphasized that individuals favored by God would be granted His blessings and experience His presence.
