The Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has clarified that his administration will not allow the planned pro-Wike rally within the state. He stated that although they support the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, maintaining the safety and stability of the region takes precedence.

The demonstration, organized by The New Associate, a collective showing support for the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, was scheduled to occur in Yenagoa, which serves as the capital of Bayelsa State.

Nevertheless, Governor Diri unequivocally stated on Wednesday during the 158th session of the State Executive Council in Yenagoa that he would not permit the event to proceed.

Governor Diri stated that even though his government does not fundamentally oppose demonstrations, organizing one now would be “foolish and unhelpful” given the current situation. This is because there are ongoing peace initiatives aimed at resolving the political turmoil in adjacent Rivers State, which maintains strong connections with Bayelsa.

We do not operate as a government that defies legal norms,” Diri stated. “We uphold and safeguard the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Nonetheless, being the primary guardian of safety for this state, it is my duty to prevent any disruption to the tranquility of Bayelsa caused by outside influences. As neighboring states, developments in Rivers directly impact Bayelsa.

The governor highlighted that President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, and this ruling requires compliance from Bayelsa.

He highlighted that the tense political atmosphere in Rivers might create a domino effect impacting Bayelsa, suggesting that any gathering connected to the crisis in Rivers could potentially lead to security concerns.

Some individuals wish to organize a large gathering here, however, we aren’t in a political phase just yet,” Diri went on. “While I won’t prevent anyone from practicing their basic freedoms, my responsibility lies with safeguarding our state’s well-being. Being the top law enforcement official, it falls upon me to maintain order, so we cannot permit anything that might upset the stability of our surroundings.

The governor additionally recommended adhering to appropriate procedures for arranging gatherings, using as an example the First Lady, Remi Tinubu, who notified the state government about her planned visit on Thursday.

He encouraged people from Bayelsa to demonstrate their backing for the First Lady’s visit, an event organized jointly with the Niger Delta Development Commission.

Governor Diri concluded by calling on Bayelsans to work together in maintaining law and order, ensuring the continued peace and security of the state.
