  • Last Friday, Jeremiah Azu was crowned the world indoor 60m champion in China.

  • The Welsh sprinter also secured a gold medal at the European Indoor Championships in the Netherlands.

  • He astonishingly clocked a personal record of 6.49 seconds in both global championships.

Jeremiah Azu aims to break the British 100-metres record this summer following his impressive performance over the past two weeks indoors.

The Welsh sprinter was crowned world indoor 60m champion in China last Friday, just two weeks after winning gold at the European Indoors in the Netherlands, running a lifetime best of 6.49sec in both finals.

Now Azu thinks he can leverage his impressive 60m performance as a launching pad to break his own 100m record, confessing
Zharnel Hughes
His national record of 9.83 seconds is within his reach.

‘I think I am capable of running a 9.8,’ confessed the young athlete aged 23, who crossed under the 10-second mark for the first and only time in his career last May in Germany, recording a time of 9.97 seconds.

‘I’ve always been aware of my capability to achieve such feats, so hitting these numbers (completing 60 meters in 6.49 seconds) only reinforces that belief for me. I wonโ€™t require doing anything extraordinary from here to break the 9.8 barrier.’

‘We currently have Zharnel holding the British record, but it feels great to be consistently close to that level and part of that discussion.’

Azu secured his sole significant personal medal in the 100m during the 2022 European Championships, where he won a bronze.

Following his selection for the British team at last yearโ€™s Paris Olympics, he got disqualified from his 100m preliminary round due to a false start.

However, the determined Azu believes he can secure a spot on the podium at the World Championships in Tokyo in September.

‘That has always been the aim,’ he said. ‘Reaching that podium would be incredible โ€“ and why not?’

‘You need to perform when it counts, and I am aware that I possess that quality. I trust my abilities in the 100m and how the season will unfold.’
