Vietnam Eyes E10 as Sole Fuel for Cars by 2026

The Department of Industry and Commerce has suggested that E10 biodiesel become the only fuel option across the country for gasoline-powered cars starting January 1, 2026.

The suggestion forms part of a preliminary directive detailing the plan for mixing biofuels with conventional fuels in Vietnam, which the department is currently inviting comments on. Biofuels consist of E10, E15, and various kinds of gasoline produced using fuel ethanol combined with regular petroleum at varying proportions.

The proposal further states that Vietnam will transition to E15 or other biofuels governed by the ministry starting January 1, 2031, depending on advancements in vehicle technology, economic factors, capabilities for producing and importing biofuels, and needs related to energy safety.

Beginning from the start of this month, various major fuel suppliers have
led the introduction of E10 in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and the northern seaport city of Hai Phong
.

Dao Duy Anh, head of the Ministry’s Department for Innovation, Sustainable Development, and Industry Advancement, stated that once E10 is introduced across the country next year, traditional petroleum products such as RON 95-V will no longer be accessible, according to reports.

In terms of pricing, the trade department will request the Ministry of Finance to evaluate and present a recommendation to both the government and the National Assembly for lowering the ecological tax on bioc fuels, considering their positive impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Following the initial launch of E5-RON92 and its widespread availability since 2014, there have been no customer reports regarding adverse effects on engine performance or longevity. Additionally, studies indicate no proof that mixing ethanol with fuel damages engines.
