A large deposit of ”
white gold
” worth $540 billion has been discovered at the bottom of a lake in Southern California.

The Salton Sea, which stands as the biggest lake in the U.S., was examined by researchers under a Department of Energy initiative. This investigation aimed to assess the quantity of lithium present, commonly known as ”
white gold
due to its sandy texture, can be found underneath the lake’s surface.

Researchers approximate that around 18 million tons of lithium can be found at the lakeโ€™s base, out of which about 4 million tons have been verified via drilling.

Given this vast reserve of lithium, the United States has the potential to manufacture sufficient batteries for approximately 382 million electric cars, thereby becoming the leading nation in global lithium reserves surpassing China.

Michael McKibben

, a professor specializing in geochemistry at the
University of California
Riverside, who was one of the 22 contributors to the research, stated:
“This is one of the largest lithium brine deposits in the world. This could make the United States completely self-sufficient in lithium and stop importing it through China.”

This finding has made Salton Sea the biggest source of lithium globally.
