UN Security Council to Tackle Western Sahara Issue in Mid-April

The French UN Security Council presidency has arranged a special meeting concerning the Western Sahara issue, which is slated for April 14, as per the provisional agenda released on their platform.

The meeting was held shortly following a visit from a French embassy delegation in Rabat to MINURSO’s base in Laayoune. During this visit, high-ranking UN officials were consulted regarding the latest events involving the Royal Armed Forces and the Polisario Front.

The meeting is taking place concurrently with arrangements for an expected visit by the United Nations Secretary-General’s special envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, to the Tindouf refugee camps. Earlier, on March 24, de Mistura had traveled to Rabat, where he held discussions with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.

In the course of the meeting, Morocco reiterated its backing for the United Nations’ endeavors aimed at achieving a practical, sustainable, and long-lasting political resolution, which would be grounded solely in its proposal for autonomy within the boundaries of national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In the meantime, before de Mistura’s visit, the Polisario Front restated its position regarding “the rights of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence.”
