The UK’s chances of establishing an economic agreement with the US before
Donald Trump
‘S memories of ‘Liberation Day’ are becoming fainter,

MailOnline

understands.

The United Kingdom has been making significant efforts to obtain an exemption from any tariffs, yet government officials are growing skeptical about reaching an accord before April 2, when the duties are set to take effect.

However, those close to the situation anticipate that discussions will carry on between the nations beyond this Wednesday, irrespective of whether the UK faces Mr. Trumpโ€™s retaliatory tariffs.

The President has designated April 2 as ‘liberation day’ for the
US economy
From his perspective on the unjust behavior of trade counterparts.

He has already declared that a 25 percent tariff on cars imported into the U.S. will take effect on this day, after imposing duties on steel and aluminum imports.

A government official informed the Mail yesterday that negotiations for a deal were still underway, though they cautioned that circumstances remained ‘uncertain’.

Meanwhile, Sir
Keir Starmer
stated that he retains the authority to react to any U.S. tariffs since ‘the nation’s interests must take priority’.

Conversations focused on ‘lessening the effect’ of any charges are still ongoing with the
White House
, he added.

Yesterday, during his trip to Yorkshire, the Prime Minister stated: “Tariffs are worrisome, and we’re diligently collaborating with various industries and sectors that might be affected.”

None of these countries desire a trade war; hence, they are currently involved in negotiations with the United States aimed at reducing the effects of the tariffs.

Now, this is what we’re diligently striving for; however, ultimately, our country’s welfare must take precedence, implying that every possibility remains under consideration.

Last year, approximately 16.9 percent of UK car exports were destined for the United States, amounting to over 101,000 vehicles with a value exceeding ยฃ7.6 billion. For both Jaguar Land Rover and Bentley, the U.S. stands as their second most important export market following the European Union.

Ministers have indicated they will adopt a practical stance regarding the tariff threats, aiming to bolster transatlantic trade relations and work toward securing a UK-US economic agreement.

Yesterday, Industry Minister Sarah Jones convened a meeting with automobile industry executives to address the issue of tariffs.

A government representative stated that the minister heard and considered the opinions of those present regarding trade discussions with the United States.

They emphasized that America is an ‘essential ally and one of our premier trade partners, with $1.2 trillion invested in each otherโ€™s economies.’

The import duty on vehicles will be added to the reciprocal tariffs scheduled to start on April 2nd. These could involve an additional 20 percent charge on UK goods as a reaction to the value-added tax rates.

In the meantime, a Labour peer proposed that the UK might think about applying 25 percent tariffs on American goods contributing to health problems should a trade war ensue.

In a discussion at the House of Lords about obesity, Lord Brooke commented: “Could I propose that we impose a tariff of 25 percent on several American goods contributing to our issuesโ€”such as Cola, Pepsi, KFC, and Big Macs? These items often lead to an overconsumption of unnecessary calories.”

‘While that might not likely occur, I sincerely hope it remains in consideration.’
