The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has dissociated itself from Joel Sangweni following his claims of being a faculty member at the university. This came about due to a social media post where he allegedly admitted to deliberately failing South African students while guaranteeing that Zimbabwean students would achieve top grades.

In a remark that has now ignited significant anger online, Sangweni posted on Facebook: “Money isn’t made here; me personally, I’m an instructor who’ll ensure your children struggle and flunk their examsโ€”while students coming from Zimbabwe will get top grades.”

The remark sparked significant backlash, as numerous social media users perceived it as a direct assault on South African students.

In response to the backlash on social media, where numerous individuals have tagged UJ online and called for action, the institution has subsequently provided clarification on the matter.

UJ stated that they have taken notice of the social media postings made by Joel Sangweni, who inaccurately portrays himself as a member of their faculty.

The university refuted the claim that Sangweni works as a lecturer at UJ, clarifying: “Mr. Sangweni does not hold any position with the university. He only acted as a tutor for a short period in 2024,” according to an official statement from UJ.

Although Sangweni subsequently stated that his Facebook account had been compromised, UJ mentioned that they are looking into the situation.

“The university views academic honesty with great importance and will implement stringent measures, even resorting to legal actions, against anyone who, through negligence or intent, compromises their dedication to maintaining academic integrity,” the institution declared.

UJ stated that they are distancing themselves from his comments and are contemplating taking legal action.

The institution stays dedicated to maintaining academic honesty and does not accept behavior that contradicts its principles.

In the meantime, social media platforms have been filled with individuals calling for the expulsion of foreigners and advocating for job opportunities to be reserved exclusively for South Africans.

“Everyone, these are the types of individuals hired by the University of Johannesburg. Look at whatโ€™s happening with Lecturer Joel Sangweni; he is jeopardizing the futures of our children! We’re supposed to stay silent just so they can call us xenophobes? That wonโ€™t fly. Not under my watch! #Abahambe #PutSouthAfricaFirst,” posted @Ms_MoloGady on X (previously known as Twitter).

@sdw_mpembe added: “There seems to be an issue here; how did this happen? This individual named Joel Sangweni, a Zimbabwean lecturer, appears to be failing South African students but granting high grades to his own countrymen.”
