Transgender Skills Training Program Launched by CM’s Directive: Empowering Futures

As part of an unprecedented effort focused on social integration and financial self-sufficiency, the Punjab government has initiated a wide-ranging technical skill development program tailored specifically for the transgender population, following explicit instructions from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

For the first time in Punjab’s history, members of the transgender community will undergo organized vocational training through the Technical Skills Training and Punjab Skills Development Fund (PSDF) initiatives. During this initial stage, more than 1,600 people will gain skills across different fields, providing them with the means to secure a respectable income and escape the vicious circle of exclusion and reliance on others.

This program aims to provide targeted training in sought-after fields including IT, freelancing, fashion design, tailoring, electrical work, solar technology, beauty services, and culinary arts. As an innovative step, the project introduces healthcare assistant courses specifically for the transgender population in Punjab, which is the inaugural offering of this kind within the region.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif firmly denounced the apathy within society and the severe mistreatment endured by the transgender community, observing that insufficient access to education and job prospects has historically pushed many individuals into lives of soliciting alms and social ostracism.

The harsh and uncaring stance against the transgender community is profoundly disappointing,” she stated. “We will equip them with the necessary skills and chances to demonstrate that capability surpasses gender. This initiative goes beyond mere skill development; it’s a move toward reinstating their respect and legitimate position within society.

She additionally highlighted her administration’s dedication to elevating all disadvantaged communities, stating, “The Punjab government is resolute in building a cohesive society wherein everyone, irrespective of their gender identity, can attain opportunities, dignity, and advancement. This transformative program will reshape the circumstances and futures of countless individuals.”

The initiative embodies the Chief Minister’s overarching ambition for a caring and inclusive Punjab, ensuring that marginalized groups frequently sidelined by society gain strength through impactful policies. This represents a crucial shift for the transgender population within the region, providing them with unprecedented opportunities for independence and societal recognition for the very first time.
