Thousands Rally in Jerusalem as Government Moves to Dismiss Attorney General

On Sunday, thousands of demonstrators assembled outside the Knesset building in Jerusalem as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet convened to decide whether to dismiss Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara.

Demonstrations initially erupted the previous week following Netanyahu’s announcement about his plan to remove the head of Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), Ronen Bar, an action perceived by numerous people as a significant challenge to democratic principles. This sentiment was partly due to Shin Bet’s role in investigating “Qatargate,” which involves probes into activities within the Prime Minister’s Office.

This move was also viewed as a clear extension of the deeply controversial judicial overhaul, similar to how Baharav-Miara’s dismissal was perceived.

As Israel resumed assaults on Gaza early Tuesday, demands for protests grew stronger. Protesters emphasized the urgency of rescuing the captives and accused the administration of instigating conflict through political maneuvers aimed at sustaining their authority instead of benefiting the nation.
