The SNP’s Westminster leader, Stephen Flynn, has stated his intention to run as a candidate for the upcoming Scottish Parliament elections scheduled for next year.

.

He appears likely to be chosen as the candidate for the SNP in Aberdeen South and North Kincardine.

Flynn expressed his delight but also mentioned that the selection process was still ongoing.

It is clear that there might be a selection competition if another candidate gathers sufficient signatures to contest his position. However, a party insider informed LFHCK IDScotland News that this scenario appears โ€œunlikely.โ€

Flynn plans to leave his position as an MP in order to secure a spot at Holyrood; however, he hasnโ€™t officially stated whether this resignation will occur before the upcoming election. Under new Holyrood regulations prohibiting dual roles, he might be required to make this change sooner rather than later.

The Member of Parliament representing Aberdeen South in the House of Commons,
announced in November
He planned to participate in the upcoming Scottish election scheduled for next May.

If elected to Holyrood, he stated that he would seek to retain his Westminster position until the subsequent general election without accepting dual compensation.

After facing backlash from fellow party members, Flynn admitted his error and stated that he would refrain from pursuing a dual position.

Nevertheless, he didn’t dismiss the possibility of running for a seat at Holyrood.

The Scottish Parliament has subsequently decided to prohibit MSPs from serving as MPs or members of the House of Lords.

The rules, which are part of the Scottish Elections (Representation and Reform) Bill, might be implemented as soon as fall.

This implies that the regulations will be implemented before the 2026 election, although they might incorporate a grace period or various exceptions.

Flynn stated, โ€œAlthough the internal selection process isnโ€™t finished yet, Iโ€™m naturally thrilled to have received nominations from SNP members throughout Aberdeen South and North Kincardine. Many of these supporters Iโ€™ve worked with over nearly 15 years.โ€

He stated that it would be a tremendous honor to get selected for the Scottish Parliament and contribute to harnessing Aberdeenโ€™s full potential, along with ensuring Scotland’s destiny as an autonomous, European country.
