American hip-hop star

Snoop Dogg

is encountering criticism for remarks regarding Pixar’s 2022 movie
Lightyear
after he claimed he felt “afraid” to bring his grandkids to the movies because of LGBTQ+ portrayal.

The musician appeared on the Itโ€™s Giving… Podcast, where he shared how he was caught off guard upon seeing the
Toy Story
spin-off, which included a sequence showing two women kissing and caring for a child jointly.

He mentioned that this sparked numerous inquiries from his grandchildren regarding homosexual couples, which he admitted, “I can’t provide an answer to.”

They’re saying, ‘She had a baby โ€” with another woman,’” Snoop mentioned on the podcast. “My grandson, right in the middle of the film, says, ‘Grandpa Snoop? How did she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!’ I wasn’t coming here for this nonsense. I just wanted to watch the damn movie.

He mentioned that the scene “really messed me up,” saying, “I’m now afraid to go to the cinema. You’re putting me right in the middle of things I can’t explain… It really confused me. I find myself asking, ‘Which part of the film was that?’ Those are just children. Do we really need to display that at their age? They’ll start questioning stuff. I don’t know how to respond.”

The section has now been removed from the YouTube video, along with a

-now-noticeable change in direction and shift in subject matter around the 30-minute point

when Snoop states, “That’s what you witness – they’re spreading it everywhere.”

Snoop’s remarks became popular online and the negative reaction came quickly.

On the contrary, certain individuals defended Snoop online, emphasizing

superficial attempts by Hollywood studios to force LGBTQ themes into their work

in films.

In
Lightyear
The backstory of the human space ranger Buzz Lightyear unfolds as his closest friend, Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba), discloses her engagement to a character called Kiko. During their 40th-anniversary gathering, they exchange a kiss.

Because of that scene, the movie

was not shown in cinemas in Middle Eastern markets

Similar to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar, the People’s Republic of China asked for the scene to be deleted; Disney refused to implement the changes. In Singapore, the kissing scene led to the movie being restricted to viewers aged 16 and older.

When speaking with Variety around the time the movie came out, Chris Evansโ€”known for voicing Buzz Lightyearโ€”commented on the scene: “It’s good, and it’s amazing, it brings me joy. It’s hard not to feel a bit annoyed that it even needs to be talked about.”

He said: “The aim is for us to reach a stage where it becomes standard practice, and this isnโ€™t something unfamiliar anymore; ultimately, it will simply be the usual approach. This kind of widespread visibility is what enables us to create movies.”
