— SITA, a transportation technology and border management firm, along with NEC Corporation, which specializes in biometric verification technologies, has entered into an agreement aimed at speeding up the implementation of digital identification solutions within the travel sector.

According to a statement from its media consultant, NEC has become part of SITA’s Digital Travel Ecosystem through this partnership. This ecosystem represents an open, interoperable structure designed to link multiple systems for real-time digital identity verification.

SITA’s ecosystem, developed in collaboration with Indicio, removes the necessity for direct connections between issuers and verifiers. This streamlines implementation for airports, airlines, and government entities.

The heart of this system is the Trust Network, overseeing secure global sharing of digital credentials.

Designed with a focus on privacy from the outset, this system allows travelers to maintain control of their information, deciding when and with whom they choose to share their identification details.

Intense focus on data security and privacy ensures that individual details stay safeguarded and under the control of the user.

As 28 percent of airlines and 43 percent of airports intend to adopt biometric identification systems within the coming year (according to SITA Air Transport IT Insights 2024), the requirement for compatible systems is increasing.

The absence of standardization has hindered broad acceptance, however, the partnership between SITA and NEC tackles this issue with a scalable structure designed for safe identity sharing.

Jeremy Springall, SITA’s Senior Vice President for Borders, commented on the collaboration, stating that following extensive investments, all players in aviation and related sectors could now fully grasp the potential of digital identities. He also noted that the industry was preparing to expand this approach significantly.

“Given NEC’s proficiency in biometrics and SITA’s extensive network of leading biometric access points globally, we are ideally positioned to expedite the global digitization of travel,” he stated.

Additionally, Nanaumi Nagamine, who serves as the Senior Director of the DID Department at NEC, mentioned that the company contributed over 125 years of innovation along with a worldwide history in reliable identity technologies.

Through our partnership with SITA, we have implemented reliable biometric systems across numerous international airports, ensuring safe and smooth journeys for countless travelers daily,” he further stated. “This enhanced cooperation aims to expedite worldwide acceptance and establish a superior benchmark for dependable digital identities within the travel sector.

Through tackling persistent interoperability issues, the partnership between SITA and NEC aims to boost the usage of digital identities among travelers. This joint effort is expected to help streamline processes, bolster security measures, and upgrade the overall travel experience for passengers at all interaction points, as stated by both organizations.
