Report: Morocco’s Severe Drought Irreversibly Damages Winter Crops

A recent report from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) indicates that Morocco has experienced significant and potentially permanent harm to its winter crop yields due to an extended dry period starting last fall.

The bulletin released earlier this week points out “a below-average buildup of organic matter,” making it difficult for certain crops to recuperate. Based on satellite information, the document indicates that the circumstances are similarly severe in both Tunisia and Algeria.

The prospects for Morocco’s grain production are notably worrying, as the expected yields for durum wheat and barley are forecasted to drop by 26% compared to the typical levels over the past five years. The document pointed out, “Multiple areas are raising alarms, and their outcomes will hinge on future climatic circumstances.”

Although certain regions like portions of Romania, Bulgaria, eastern Ukraine, Morocco, and western Algeria have experienced irreparable harm, circumstances differ throughout North Africa.

In Algeria, substantial rainfalls in February aided the recovery of winter crops, notably in the central and northeast areas, aligning grain predictions with typical historical levels.

In the meantime, Tunisia is seeing favorable circumstances, where crops are approaching their reproductive phase and biomass accumulation is surpassing typical seasonal levels, which suggests a promising forecast for grain production.

The JRC MARS Bulletin, which uses satellite technology to monitor farming conditions throughout Europe and nearby areas, has released new insights derived from data collected up until March 15.
