Tens of thousands of supporters of the incarcerated mayor have taken to the streets of Istanbul, Turkey, advocating for democracy.

Last week, Ekrem İmamoğlu, considered the primary political opponent to Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, was detained on allegations of corruption, which has led to widespread demonstrations.

He rejects the accusations and asserts that his detention has political undertones. Imamoglu is presently kept in isolation at a maximum-security facility located on the periphery of Istanbul.

The massive crowd on Saturday overflowed from the protest venue into an adjacent park. The chairperson of Imamoglu’s Republican People’s Party (CHP) spoke to the gathered protesters, reciting a message from the incarcerated politician.

“I feel fearless knowing you support me both behind and beside me. My courage stems from the unity of our nation, which stands together against oppression,” as per reports from Reuters quoting the content of the letter. This message came with an artificially generated video showing Imamoglu reciting his letter within a prison cell.

Imamoglu’s spouse, Dilek, was present at the demonstration as well, and addressed the audience saying, “We will continue to fight and struggle.”

Assembled beneath the unclouded azure heavens, the demonstrators brandished Turkey’s crimson-and-white banners and shouted: “Rights, law, justice!”

Imamoglu has been serving as the mayor of Istanbul since 2019 and secured a convincing win in last year’s mayoral elections.

He is broadly seen as the sole Turkish politician with the potential to rival Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party—commonly referred to as AK—at the polls.

Large-scale demonstrations supporting democracy have been occurring across the nation following Imamoglu’s detention earlier this month.

They have also expressed worries that they might not receive a free and fair trial when their case comes before the court.

The government has refuted claims that Imamoglu’s detention was politically driven and maintains that the Turkish judiciary operates independently.

Erdogan has stated that the demonstrations equate to “terrorism in the streets.”
, blaming protesters for assaulting law enforcement officers and destroying public assets.

At times, riot police have tried to scatter these protests by employing tear gas and rubber bullets.
