Poll Reveals Majority Oppose Yoon’s Return to Politics Post-Impeachment

After the Constitutional Court ruled to oust ex-President Yoon Suk-yeol, recent polls revealed that seven out of ten participants think Yoon should stay away from the forthcoming election campaign. Nevertheless, almost 45% indicated they wouldn’t endorse the court’s verdict.

The poll, carried out by Research View on April 4th and published the following day, surveyed 1,000 adults nationwide in South Korea regarding their opinions after the significant ruling was made.

Of those surveyed, 68.6% indicated that Yoon ought to abstain from engaging in politics, characterizing him as “the individual who initiated a nationwide crisis.” In contrast, 20.6% argued that he should voice his opposition to what was perceived as an unfair removal and participate in the electoral process.

When queried about their acceptance of the Constitutional Court’s ruling, 52.2% indicated they would agree. Conversely, 44.8% stated they would refuse.

The survey delved into public sentiment regarding the core principle of the forthcoming 21st presidential election, scheduled after Yoon’s impeachment. Among participants, the most common response—selected by 23.8%—was that “rectifying the wrongdoings of the Yoon government” should characterize this pivotal time. This view was closely trailed by “collaborative governance and national cohesion,” favored by 20.8%, then “surmounting the economic downturn,” chosen by 18.6%, with “implementing legal integrity” coming in fourth place at 10.8%.

When queried regarding possible presidential contenders from the governing People Power Party, Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Moon-soo led with 18.6% of the support.

Following him was ex-lawmaker Yoo Seong-min with 14.4%, former party head Han Dong-hoon at 10.3%, Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo with 9.1%, legislator Ahn Cheol-soo at 6.2%, and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon with 5.8%.

In the opposing camp, Democratic Party frontrunner Lee Jae-myung led significantly with 48.9%, considerably outpacing ex-Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum who secured 8.1%, followed by Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon with 7.5%.

The research employed an automatic responder tool through randomized calling of mobile phone owners for data collection. This study carries a potential deviation of ±3.1 percent units within a 95% reliability interval and achieved a reply ratio of 3.8%.
