Nepal, April 2 — Nepal Police have confirmed that 20 people were shot, 746 tear gas shells were launched, and that 58 rounds of live ammunition and 192 blank rounds were fired during the pro-monarchy protests on March 28.

At a press conference arranged by the police on Wednesday, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Dinesh Acharya, spokesperson for Nepal Police, said that out of the 20 people who were shot during the demonstration, two are females and 18 are males.

“The twelve individuals who were wounded are presently undergoing medical care at hospitals,” he stated.

DIG Acharya reported that a total of 58 rounds of live ammunition were fired during the protests, along with 746 rounds of tear gas and 192 blank fires. Two shots were reportedly fired from a pistol.

Furthermore, 55 Nepal Police officers and 23 Armed Police Force members sustained injuries during the confrontations. The police additionally reported that 53 demonstrators were hurt due to the force employed by law enforcement officials.

Timing of first strikes

At the press conference, DIG Acharya stated that the initial tear gas canister was fired at 12:50 pm, approximately two hours after the protests began, whereas the first instance of police firing a blank round occurred at 2:54 pm.

At approximately 12:50 PM, we released the initial tear gas canister to scatter the gathering of roughly 3,000 individuals led by Durga Prasai,” he stated. “Nonetheless, rather than heading toward the venue as intended, he tried to breach the police line, which only intensified the unrest among the crowd.

‘Shots fired to control agitated crowd’

DIG Acharya also stated that they were compelled to use gunfire to manage an unruly mob during a demonstration.

“A disturbed mob inflicted considerable harm upon numerous homes. We had to resort to firing warning shots to regain command of the scenario,” stated DIG Acharya. According to him, this escalation was prompted by the violent conduct of the demonstrators, even though law enforcement maintained a strategy of employing only necessary force.

The demonstration at Tinkune was orchestrated by a monarchist faction. Police reports indicate that two individuals died during the event, and considerable damage to property occurred.

The police have mentioned that they continue with their ongoing investigations into the incident.
