The PARLIAMENT has characterized most mining operations nationwide as ‘reckless’ because they fail to comply with fundamental environmental protection protocols.

These comments arise against the background of worries expressed by various stakeholders who contend that despite being rich in minerals, Zimbabwe is failing to fully exploit its resource potential to combat poverty via value addition and other methods.

Throughout the years, environmental activists have lambasted the rapid escalation of pollution, coinciding with the degradation of numerous aquatic ecosystems and significant damage to forested areas.

At the Silveria House hosted Multi-Stakeholder Meeting on Responsible Mining Audit Feedback in Buhera on Wednesday, Sam Matema, who chairs the Portfolio Committee on Environment, Climate, and Wildlife, acknowledged that current mining operations do not align with optimal standards.

Mining and environmental concerns revolve around human rights. The dust and noise generated by mining operations can disrupt childrenโ€™s right to learn effectively. Similarly, altering forests and water bodies impacts the well-being of wildlife.

“What level of responsibility have we demonstrated when extracting minerals? In my view, definitely NOT at all. We havenโ€™t shown enough responsibility so far. Itโ€™s crucial that we become more accountable moving forward. This includes implementing technologies for monitoring concerns such as carbon capture and environmental conservation,โ€ he stated.

The representative from Buhera Central urged the mining industry to strike a balance between human economic interests and overall social and environmental welfare.

He emphasized that tree planting initiatives along with the responsibility for maintaining related requirements within local communities should be central to all operations.

“A majority of these investors within mining areas do not adhere to the traditions of indigenous peoples. It is essential for them to disclose details about their gains from these projects. Consider this: certain firms propose painting schools as part of corporate social responsibility initiatives. Is that all? The industry should instill optimism among both current residents and coming ones. Failing to achieve this equates to constructing a pathway towards despair,” said Matema.
