TOKYO — As an extended period of intense heat continues across Japan, people are increasingly worried about higher energy costs throughout the summer season. According to a study carried out by Panasonic Corporation in July, around 70% of participants in Japan reported that their electric bills have gone up this summer. The main reason behind this increase? Air conditioning units.

Although significant focus is placed on thermostat adjustments and the decision to switch off the system when departing, an underappreciated element is the “external unit.” Numerous individuals have misconceptions about the correct way to care for this equipment.

As per Panasonic, the larger the gap between the “outdoor temperature” (the temperature of the air taken in by the external unit to chill the refrigerant) and the set temperature, the more power is used. Decreasing the incoming air temperature by only 1 degree Celsius may reportedly cut energy use by approximately 13%, similar to increasing the thermostat setting by 1°C.

What kind of upkeep helps lower electricity usage?

Fuko Fukuda, an air specialist with Panasonic, suggests that maintaining clear space around the external unit is essential. Avoid exposing it to direct sun rays or surrounding it with stuff. Putting things near the unit or covering it in a manner that hinders heat release may lower cooling effectiveness; hence, keeping objects minimum 30 centimeters apart from the front part of the device is recommended. Additionally, cleaning dirt and particles off the rear section of the unit should be done regularly.

Certain energy-efficient practices mentioned by those who participated in the survey could potentially be harmful or cause excessive strain on the device. For example, several individuals insulate the unit to prevent exposure to direct sunlight, yet this can lead to higher electricity usage by restricting air circulation. It is advised that at least three out of the six faces—front, rear, left, right, top, and bottom—remain uncovered to guarantee adequate cooling.

Moreover, positioning a damp towel over the device is discouraged. Although the unit can withstand some grime, its inner parts are sensitive, and moisture getting inside may cause problems. This might result in a failure or the towel being drawn into the air inlet or outlet. Due to comparable concerns, do not spray the unit with water or use a high-pressure cleaner. Rather, carefully wipe away dust and debris from the exterior casing and rear section of the unit using a dry cloth or an equivalent item.

While indoor unit filters need regular maintenance, outdoor units do not require constant cleaning; however, it is advisable to inspect and maintain them one or two times annually to extend the life of your air conditioning system.

A survey carried out by Panasonic’s “Eolia” air conditioning line in July focused on individuals aged between 20 and 60 across the country who have air conditioners, with 510 participants responding. When asked about summer energy expenses, 27% described them as “very expensive,” and 46% considered them “moderately expensive.”
