Residents of Oyo and Osun states have been encouraged to embrace wholesome and energetic ways of living to ensure good health, delay early signs of aging, and reduce feelings of loneliness.

Thursday saw a call issued by the Oyo State Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, along with a previous Secretary to the state government and Head of Service, Chief Adebisi Adesola, during an Elders’ Hangout hosted by the Association of Retired Heads of Service and Permanent Secretaries from Oyo and Osun states at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan.

Led by the Permanent Secretary from the Office of the Head of Service, Mr. Audu Akeem, Mrs. Oni highlighted the state administration’s dedication to enhancing the well-being of retired individuals. She praised them for their past efforts within the public sector. Additionally, she urged them to stay active and engaged to ensure a fulfilling retirement life.

Chairperson Adesola, who additionally leads the Association, highlighted the significance of involvement after retirement, encouraging seniors to discover pastimes, offer their services through volunteering, and engage in local activities to maintain physical health, mental sharpness, and social interaction.

In addition, the chairperson of the organizing committee, Chief Bayo Oyero, stated that being actively involved in community events improves seniors’ well-being, feeling of direction, and general satisfaction. He encouraged retired individuals to maintain physical and mental engagement.

I encourage all of us to take care of our well-being and monitor our health closely. Routine medical examinations can help avoid numerous age-related illnesses.

“To avoid early aging and loneliness, we should participate in purposeful tasks and see our physician frequently,” Oyero stated.

He referred to the event as a humble act of appreciation, recognizing the contribution retired individuals made to the civil administration of Oyo State.

Previously, Dr. Augustine Okesola gave a talk titled “Comprehending dental health: More than just teeth.”

He suggested that excellent dental hygiene is connected to total wellness and may help avoid widespread conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes, emphasizing the mouth as an essential gateway for comprehending and enhancing overall health.

Dr. Okesola recommended that retired individuals keep up with routine dental visits, brush their teeth regularly each day using fluoride-based toothpaste, and floss consistently. He also suggested managing dry mouth by drinking plenty of water and utilizing artificial saliva products.

Furthermore, he suggested maintaining a nutritious diet, stopping smoking to reduce the risk of periodontal disease and mouth cancer, and correcting problems such as damaged or lost teeth through options like caps, dental implants, or false teeth.

Key moments of the gathering included a visit to the IITA facilities and the recognition of three association members with Octogenarian Awards.
