Senior citizens have been encouraged to adopt wholesome, energetic ways of living to support their bodily and cognitive health, delay early signs of aging, and fight against loneliness.

Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, MNl, along with Chief Adebisi Adesola, who previously served as Secretary to the State Government/Head of Service, delivered remarks on Thursday at an Elders’ gathering hosted by the Association of Retired Heads of Service and Permanent Secretaries from Oyo and Osun states, which took place at IITA, Ibadan.

The head of service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni stated that the Oyo State administration is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of its retired employees.

She stated this via the Permanent Secretary at the Office of the Head of Service, Mr. Audu Akeem.

The head of the department honored the retired individuals for their role in promoting the civil service within Oyo.

She urged them to remain productive in order to have a satisfying retirement.

At the gathering, attended by more than 90 association members, Chief Adebisi emphasized the value of staying involved after retirement and pledged ongoing assistance to the retired individuals.

Chief Adebisi, also serving as the President of the Association, mentioned that actions like volunteer work, discovering new interests, and participating in local gatherings assist older adults in maintaining physical health, mental sharpness, and social engagement.

Additionally, the chairperson of the organizing committee, Chief Bayo Oyero, highlighted that participation in community activities enhances overall well-being, provides a stronger feeling of direction, and leads to a more satisfying later stage of life. Chief Oyero, a respected elder, encouraged retired individuals to remain both mentally and physically engaged.

“I encourage all of us to take care of our well-being and monitor our health closely. Routine medical examinations can help avoid numerous age-related illnesses. To stop early aging and loneliness, we should participate in purposeful activities and see our physician frequently,” Oyero stated.

He referred to the incident as a simple act of appreciation, recognizing the contribution made by retired officials to the administrative system of Oyo.

Previously, Dr. Augustine Okesola gave a talk titled “Understanding Oral Health: More Than Just Teeth.”

He suggested that excellent dental hygiene is connected to total wellness and may help avoid widespread conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes, emphasizing the mouth as an essential gateway for comprehending and enhancing overall health.

Dr. Okesola recommended that retired individuals keep up with routine dental examinations, brush their teeth every day with fluoridated toothpaste and use floss regularly, as well as address dry mouth by drinking plenty of water and employing artificial saliva products.

Moreover, he suggests maintaining a nutritious diet, stopping smoking to avoid periodontal disease and mouth cancer, and correcting problems such as damaged or lost teeth through solutions like caps, implants, or false teeth.

Key moments of the gathering included a visit to the IITA facilities and the announcement of the Octogenarian Awards for three association members.
