Calculated bet?

Re: ” Putin considers establishing a provisional Ukrainian government,” (World News, March 29).

Apparently, the discussions between Trump and Putin have resulted in a minor concession; Russia has agreed not to continue dismantling Ukraineโ€™s energy infrastructure. Could this seemingly benevolent gesture actually signify that Putin anticipates these regions becoming part of Russian territory shortly, thus avoiding the costs associated with reconstruction later?

Defence backfires

Regarding “EU Informed of Uyghur Safety,” (BP, March 15).

Answering that these cases are “being managed according to Thai law” to address the European Parliamentโ€™s concern about Thailand using Section 112 of the Criminal Code to unfairly restrict freedom of expression as defined by fundamental democratic values may not be the most astute response.

The European Unionโ€™s leadership is protesting against the inherent injustice of Thai law when adhered to strictly. By asserting that they are indeed complying with these laws, Thai authorities inadvertently confirm that such laws are fundamentally flawed due to their clear disregard for democratic principles.

This certainly appears to be an Own Goal. The association of Thai institutions with the application of this particular law has tarnished their image. This issue was significant enough to prompt the European Parliament to adopt a resolution criticizing Thailand, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Trump helps liberals

Re: “Advisers call for portfolio revisions,” (Business, March 29).

The 25% duties on numerous products like steel and aluminum, which were initially announced by the Trump administration in the United States, have been enforced with only minor delays for Canada and Mexico. Other nations within both the European Union and Asia will likely adopt similar measures soon enough.

In an added twist of irony, Donald Trump declared his intention to annex both Greenland and its northern neighbors, sarcastically mentioning that the U.S. would triumph over Canada in their favorite pastimeโ€”hockeyโ€”at the recent Four Nations Hockey Tournament.

In the final analysis, it was indeed the Canadians who had the last word when Connor McDavid scored the decisive โ€œgolden goalโ€ during the extra time, thus reinforcing Canadaโ€™s dominance in the realm of ice hockey yet again! Subsequently, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded to President Donald Trump via Twitter, asserting emphatically that the United States would not be claiming mastery over Canadaโ€™s cherished sport.

Heโ€™s merely helping the Liberals led by Mr. Trudeau secure victory in the forthcoming Canadian election. Previously, when Mr. Trump made comments about annexing Canada, the Conservatives enjoyed a substantial double-digit advantage over the Liberals and seemed poised for a majority government win. However, this gap has significantly narrowed due largely to Mr. Trump’s recent actions. Consequently, Mr. Trump is undermining conservative causes globally with his outlandish remarks on social platforms.

Switch off AI

Re: “How Frugal AI Alone Won’t Solve Energy Problems,” (Opinion, March 23).

Regarding Boris Rufโ€™s comment on AIโ€™s high energy consumption, since human methods of power production are outdated, AI will likely discover a new means of generating its own electricity shortly. Worries about artificial intelligence shouldnโ€™t just focus on political and scientific aspects.

Anxiety about what lies ahead is often just imagination and better suited for creators like authors and filmmakers. People follow leaders based on their vision rather than electoral support. When considering issues with artificial intelligence, one could turn to James Cameron, who over four decades ago penned “The Terminator.” In his narrative, machines viewed humanity as a threat and sought our demise. Perhaps we can learn from this story and prevent AI from advancing to the point where it becomes an existential danger. The choice may ultimately come down to either halting AIโ€™s progress or facing dire consequences ourselves.
