I can tell you’re able to hear me now.

An intriguing aspect of activities in the wilderness is the desire for seclusion combined with maintaining some form of connectivity just in case. This duality serves as a precaution because trouble can arise quickly where few people are present. Yet, the tranquility and solitude found in nature are precisely what draw us away from urban life in the first place.

And apps like
onX
has simplified that task considerably through clear-cut navigation that enables you to venture into uncharted territories and explore extensively, offering an overview of your environment and your desired destination from above. They have also progressed towards providing this perspective even in areas without internet or cellular service by incorporating offline map capabilities.

However, that approach has its limits because there are instances when you genuinely require cell phone serviceโ€”to escape from a difficult scenario or to determine which path to follow for your next move.

Apart from having a satellite communication tool, onX is simplifying the process of determining your next destination with their new cell phone coverage layer. This feature shows precisely where you should go to find reception. I think this is quite beneficial.

โ€œHaving access to cellular services provides numerous off-road enthusiasts with a sense of security,” states Andy Zielinski, the Senior Product Marketing Manager at onX Offroad. He continues, โ€œThis allows them to maintain contact with loved ones, update their workplaces, and seek assistance in case of unforeseen events. Conversely, adventurous off-roaders might utilize these features to disconnect completely and discover spots where they can truly unwind. This addition serves as an extra method for onX Offroad to equip app users with precise, dependable, and pertinent data tailored to their current expedition.โ€

The great thing about this feature, Zielinski, is that it lets you venture into areas with cell phone coverage, but also gives you the option to go somewhere entirely without service. There have certainly been moments in my life when I’ve completely wanted to avoid any trace of connectivity, making this a significant advantage for me.

The updated functionality will be available for onX Off Road subscribers at the Premium and Elite levels, providing information about mobile network coverage from Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobileโ€”the primary cellular providers nationwide. This enhancement functions whether you have an active internet connection or are using the appโ€™s offline map capabilities, ensuring you can explore thoroughly knowing exactly where reception is still accessible.

At present, though, it will only be accessible for onX’s Off-Road system and not its other offerings such as
onX Hunt
However, I wouldn’t be surprised if this feature makes its way to those other versions shortly.
