The Open Foundation West Africa (OFWA) and the Ghana Edtech Alliance (GETA) have formally entered into an agreement through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at making a difference within the education field. This ceremony occurred on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at OFWA’s location in Sal Heights, Abelemkpe.

GETA is an aggregation of educational technology startups dedicated to developing creative solutions “for us, by us,” according to Kwame Nyatuame, the president of GETA, with the aim of reshaping the Ghanaian education system.

Speaking about OFWA’s education initiatives, OFWA’s Executive Director Jael Serwaa Boateng emphasized the Kiwix4schools program during the ceremony, which involves loading learning materials onto devices for use without an internet connection to enhance access.

Nevertheless, infrastructure-related obstacles like limited availability of gadgets including computers, tablets, and similar tools have created major limitations. This problem highlights the importance of partnering with educational technology groups, for instance, the Ghana Edtech Alliance, to develop remedies aimed at achieving a shared objective: ensuring everyone has access to learning materials; and utilizing digital innovations to enhance the educational experience.

Kwame Nyatuame, Chairman of GETA, further highlighted during the ceremony that education acts as the key enabler for national progress, with technology serving as a crucial instrument to enhance its function as a promoter of country building.

The agreement signed between OFWA and GETA signifies the beginning of a productive partnership, designed to promote open education in Ghana and throughout Africa, as well as to reshape the educational environment using digital tools and technological advancements.
