Regardless of whatever they doโ€”or more accurately, sayโ€”
BBC
hosts can’t help but get criticized.

Occasionally, they become unintended casualties in the conflict between the corporation and those opposing its alleged biases. However, some hosts tend to be inherently polarizing and face relentless criticism online.

Not only does Radio 4โ€™s
Emma Barnett
and
Nick Robinson
For example, they tend to irritate more than their fair share of listeners โ€“ it is now said that they also rub each other the wrong way.

As a result, sources claim that they seldom co-host the main news program Today simultaneously. It has been over 90 days since their last joint appearance, which is a longer break than what any other hosts have experienced, as mentioned by The Times yesterday. This situation reportedly led to various scheduling challenges.

Those inside reveal ‘conflicting personalities’ and as one person mentioned, ‘the unavoidable tensions arising from combining two dominant individuals’.

But other BBC sources yesterday sought to dampen the speculation, pointing out that โ€˜schedules have been out of the ordinary latelyโ€™ following presenter Mishal Husainโ€™s departure last year.

Many express regret over the lack of Ms Husainโ€™s soothing, consistent composure. She was also known for her politeness. Frequent listeners of Today highlight that Ms Barnett, aged 40, who
formerly hosted Ladies’ Segment
is an entirely different presenter known for a much more ‘blunt’ interviewing approach.

Just last week, she faced significant backlash on social media platforms due to her aggressive confrontation with Heathrowโ€™s CEO regarding the electrical substation fire that caused flight cancellations on Friday.

A critic of One X complained about her ‘complaining and monotonous queries.’ Someone else remarked, ‘Why keep interrupting without giving others a chance to respond?’

It has been proposed that Ms. Barnett and Ms. Husain, who is 52 years old, did not have a good relationship. Some say that before leaving, Ms. Husain wasn’t very satisfied with the way the program was going. Notably, as reported by certain sources, Ms. Barnett missed being at the Today studio for her coworkerโ€™s send-off event in December, which gathered both current and former hosts.

The underlying cause of the apparent strain between Ms Barnett and Robinson remains uncertain. A source suggested it might be linked to a possible oversight during a broadcast towards the end of last year but refused to disclose whom this incident affected.

According to industry data, the weekly viewership of Today currently sits at around 5.73 million. Although this number represents a drop from the peak of 7.5 million seen back in 2016, the showโ€™s viewership remains fairly steady. Additionally, an increasing number of individuals are tuning into the program through various applications even after the initial broadcast.

There was an urgent requirement to bring back balance to the show, which is why BBC executives sought another calm individual to take over from Ms Husain. Given her 25 years of experience as Europe Editor, Katya Adler seemed like the obvious choice. However, the position ended up going to Anna Foster, who is based in Beirut as their Middle East correspondent, at age 45.

She had already won over radio executives by hosting the drive-time show on Radio 5 Live for close to ten years.

Her proficiency in international journalism, particularly her deep understanding of the Middle Eastโ€”a region often dominating headlinesโ€”was considered another crucial aspect.

‘Although Anna may not be a familiar name for everyone yet, she is highly regarded at the BBC. She remains calm under stress and is considered both proficient and capable of connecting with the audienceโ€”making complex topics engaging,’ noted someone within the organization.

Other people mentioned yesterday that her casual demeanor might have a ‘soothing’ impact on her co-presenters.

Prior to their previous appearance in mid-December, Ms Barnett and Robinson โ€“ who have often been accused of exhibiting a pro-Conservative bias in their reporting โ€“ had only shared the studio stage three times over a period exceeding 150 days.

Altogether, they have co-hosted 13 times, which falls significantly short compared to other duos who usually share responsibilities over 20 times, as reported by The Times.
