  • Joseph Yamin, the National Organizer of the NDC, has alleged that the government’s unit combating unlawful mining is engaging in extortion against illegal miners.

  • He asserts that the task force benefits from the galamsey issue instead of addressing it.

  • Yamin has urged President John Mahama to immediately stop all mining activities and implement a countrywide prohibition.

The head of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) party, Joseph Yamin, has criticized harshly the government’s efforts against illegal mining activities.

He blamed individuals within the task force, known as the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), for extorting illegal miners rather than addressing their harmful activities.

In a recent address to a gathering of miners, Mr. Yamin stated that the organization specifically assigned to put an end to the illicit mining issue, widely referred to as galamsey, is instead benefiting from it.

He claimed that the government’s anti-galamsey special operations unit regularly collects funds from unauthorized miners to let them keep operating.

“The actions taken by the task force cannot be described as combating unlawful mining. Instead, they are engaging in blackmailing and causing issues,” he claimed.

The national organizer of the NDC urged President John Mahama to suspend the activities of the anti-galamsey unit and implement a prohibition on all forms of mining within the nation.

“The President John Dramani Mahama should urgently direct an end to all ongoing mining activities. He needs to instruct the IGP, the Minister of Interior, and the current task force to promptly suspend every operation,” he stated.

“Is there not a single legal miner in this nation? Where is the team responsible for reviewing the paperwork of those engaged in miningโ€”where they are operating and whether they possess valid mining licenses?” he further remarked.

The AG instructs EOCO to examine Yamin, Abanga

At the same time, it had previously been announced that the Attorney General, Dominic Ayine, directed the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) to look into Yakubu Abanga, the Third Deputy President of the NDC, and Joseph Yammin concerning claims they were involved in unauthorized mining operations.

This instruction came after Professor Frimpong-Boateng’s report, which sought to determine the level of their participation in illegal mining activities and to uncover additional people involved.

The inquiry aimed to reinforce legal principles and safeguard Ghana’s environmental assets.

The EOCO was assigned the responsibility of conducting an exhaustive inquiry into the claims, collecting relevant information, and suggesting suitable measures.

The investigation aimed to provide clarity regarding the suspected participation of NDC officials and others in unlawful mineral extraction operations.

Earlier reports indicated that a group known as the Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association had previously alleged that Joseph Yamin and Yakubu Abanga established an unlawful anti-galamsey task force aimed at creating unrest at their mining locations.

Nevertheless, in a Facebook update released on Sunday, July 13, 2025, the NDC National Coordinator denied the claims leveled against him.

He expressed his willingness to participate in any inquiry regarding the issue.
