Morocco Breaks Export Record with Onions After Lifting 2024 Restrictions

Moroccan fresh onion exports reached a record peak after the removal of governmental limitations in 2024, as reported by EastFruit.


From June 2024 to May 2025, the nation shipped out 64,900 metric tons valued at $238 million, almost 4.8 times higher than the prior season and exceeding the 2022/23 benchmark by 3%.


Previously under 10,000 tonnes prior to 2013, seasonal onion exports saw a consistent increase and surpassed 60,000 tonnes during the 2022/23 season, only to drop sharply to 13,500 tonnes in 2023/24 as a result of a governmental restriction on deliveries to West Africa.


The restriction was removed in the summer of 2024, enabling levels to recover.


Western Africa continues to be the primary market, where Mauritania has doubled its imports, while Ivory Coast saw an increase in acquisitions and Mali and Senegal experienced decreases.


The United Arab Emirates became a new market, accounting for 5,500 tonnes, which represents 8.5% of total exports. In 2024, onions were the fourth-largest vegetable export from Morocco, following tomatoes, peppers, and carrots.
