Moroccan Airports Aim for 80 Million Passengers by 2030, Minister Announces

A “very ambitious” initiative has been endorsed to boost the passenger handling capability at Moroccan airports from 30 million to 80 million annually by 2030. This was disclosed by the Minister of Transportation and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, during a statement made in Casablanca on Wednesday.

A comprehensive investment plan designed to enhance and update airports in the cities hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup was endorsed under the “Airports 2030” initiative by the National Airports Authority (ONDA). This announcement came during a session of the ONDA Board of Directors, led by Kayouh.

“We are tackling significant hurdles, such as gearing up for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, to boost aviation expansion, enhance service standards, fulfill traveler expectations, and reinforce Morocco’s position as an attractive tourist hub,” he stated.

“This comprehensive and bold initiative seeks to support the rapid expansion of the aviation industry within our nation, boosting passenger numbers from 30 million to 80 million by the year 2030,” he further explained.

In line with the national aviation strategy, the minister disclosed plans to develop Royal Air Maroc (RAM), the country’s flag carrier. The government intends to enhance RAM through a performance agreement aimed at boosting its fleet size from 50 to 200 planes by 2037—a significant shift wherein ONDA will have an essential function.

This involves preparing the operational and logistics systems, with a focus on reinforcing Casablanca Mohammed V Airport’s role as an international gateway that can support Royal Air Maroc’s aim to establish itself as an aerial link connecting four continents.

Kayouh further emphasized the plan to integrate Casablanca Airport with the high-speed train (TGV) system by building a modern railway station compliant with global standards. This initiative aims to transform the airport into a major transport center, connecting various modes of transit including roads, fast trains, and local railways.

In addition, he highlighted the key role of airports in the southern and eastern parts of the kingdom, emphasizing their contribution to enhancing internal aviation and augmenting the allure of tourist destinations like Beni Mellal, Ouarzazate, Zagora, Taroudant, Tata, Assa-Zag, and Bouarfa.
