In 2024, at least 8,938 individuals perished along migratory paths globally, marking it the most lethal year documented thus far, as indicated by recent data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

This figure extends a streak of rising fatalities over the past five years, breaking the earlier high of 8,747 migrant deaths documented in 2023.

“The increasing fatalities among migrants across the globe are both unjustifiable and avoidable. Each statistic represents an individual whose life has been tragically lost, leaving behind immeasurable grief,” stated Ugochi Daniels, the IOM Deputy Director General for Operations.

In July 2024, the highest number of fatalities and disappearances were recorded, totaling 1,130 people.

The highest number of fatalities occurred in Asia, where 2,778 individuals were reported dead, followed by Africa with 2,242 deaths, and then Europe with 233 casualties.

Around the globe, drowning, vehicular incidents, inadequate housing, scarcity of food and water, and violent acts continued to be the primary reasons for individuals who were traveling.

Starting from 2022, at least one out of every ten migrant fatalities documented was due to violence.

In Europe, the figure dropped to 6%.

In 2024, much of this was attributed to the violence faced by people traveling through Asia, resulting in almost 600 deaths along migration paths spanning South and Southeastern Asia.

Migrants who have gone missing without being found at sea or unidentified

The real count of migrant fatalities and vanishings is probably far greater, since numerous deaths aren’t recorded because of insufficient official documentation.

Since 2014, over 30,000 individuals who perished during migration remain unrecovered.

The IOM’s Missing Migrants Project suggests that potentially tens of thousands of families worldwide may be grieving for relatives who vanished while crossing the Central and Western Mediterranean routes to reach Europe.

“The increase in fatalities is horrific by itself, yet the reality that thousands go unrecognized annually adds an even greater sorrow,” stated Julia Black, who coordinates the IOMโ€™s Missing Migrants Project.

Past the desolation and unanswered queries experienced by families who have lost someone dear, insufficient comprehensive data on the dangers confronting migrants impedes crucial rescue efforts.

The most dangerous path is the Central Mediterranean route, with over 24,000 individuals losing their lives in the past ten years.

In Europe, the migration paths with the highest number of casualties included the Western Balkans route and the crossing from continental Europe to the United Kingdom via the English Channel.

The migration path through the Western Balkans is usually taken by individuals seeking asylum, as well as other migrants, who enter Greece or Bulgaria from Turkey with the aim of reaching Western or Northern European countries.

“The rise in fatalities across numerous global regions underscores the necessity for a comprehensive international effort aimed at preventing additional heartbreaking losses,” stated Daniels.
