“Sankofa,” an Akan term meaning “to return and retrieve it,” representing the act of looking back and rediscovering lessons from history, has become the internationally recognized name for a well-known urban space known as ‘Yonge-Dundas Square’ in Toronto.

The Yonge-Dundas Square in Toronto has now been officially named Sankofa Square and will open tomorrow, Saturday, August 23, 2025, featuring a carnival-like event, as reported by Secret Toronto.

During Sankofa Day, the festival is known as such, an open-air, full-day gathering showcasing entertainment, cuisine, artwork, and additional activities. This day signifies the end of the renaming initiative, which started in 2023 following a decision made by the municipal committee to change the square’s name because of its original name linked to the transatlantic slavery system.

In line with suggestions made by a group comprising Black and Indigenous leaders, the choice to rename the area received formal approval from the Toronto City Council. The prior name, Dundas, was abandoned due to its historical link with Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville—a prominent politician between the 1770s and early 1800s—who, during discussions within the British Parliament regarding proposals to abolish slavery, postponed the proceedings!

The change also impacts additional municipal facilities such as the Dundas and Dundas West metro stations along with the Jane/Dundas Public Library. A community awareness initiative will additionally commence to recognize the effects of the transatlantic slave trade and enslavement.
