On April 2nd in Nepal, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Mayor Balendra Shah expressed his gratitude towards the protesting teachers who conducted a peaceful demonstration in the capital city on Wednesday. The demonstrators maintained discipline by ensuring no litter was left behind and refrained from damaging any structures.

On Wednesday, he took to Facebook to clarify that his intention was to raise awareness rather than enforce penalties, and encouraged teachers to pass this message along to their students.

On Wednesday, Mayor Shah posted on Facebook, โ€œTo all educators, you conducted your protest without causing damage or leaving trash behind; I appreciate this gesture. Our aim should be fostering understanding rather than imposing fines. We strive to create a community with a strong sense of responsibility towards public assets, treating them as personal possessions. Kindly teach these values to your students too.โ€

Emphasizing that collaboration among everyone involved was crucial for constructing a thriving community, he highlighted that the role of educators held even greater significance.

“As educators, you bear significant responsibilities and roles in this matter,” he stated. Additionally, he asked for the event to be organized thoughtfully so as not to disrupt the students’ academic pursuits.

Mayor Shah stated that the motto ‘Singha Durbar in the villages’ only applied to rural areas and expressed hope that someday citizens will not have to travel to the capital city to assert their rights.
