A Conservative supporter who has contributed over £5 million to the party holds agreements valued at millions of pounds with
Sadiq Khan
The Daily Mail can disclose at ‘s City Hall.

Dale Vince’s company, Ecotricity, has received over £3.5 million for providing electricity to the mayor’s Greater region.
London
Authority (GLA) since 2020.

The eco-friendly entrepreneur has contributed over £5.5 million to the
Labour Party
or its political figures during the same time, including the Prime Minister Sir
Keir Starmer
and deputy leader
Angela Rayner
.

No indication of misconduct exists, yet critics noted that the disclosure could provoke surprise among taxpayers.

According to Electoral Commission records, political contributions were channelled via Mr. Vince’s company, Ecotricity, which provides ‘certified’
vegan
’ green energy.

Data acquired through Freedom of Information legislation reveals that Ecotricity has received £3.55 million from City Hall since the 2020/21 period.

This involves over £1.3 million in 2023/24 — at the same time that Mr. Vince provided millions to Labour for its general election campaign fund.

Zia Yusuf from Reform UK stated: ‘The reality that one of Labour’s major contributors, Dale Vince’s Ecotricity, received £3.5 million in public funds from Sadiq Khan’s Greater London Authority over the past five years would anger citizens.’

Susan Hall, head of the Conservatives in the London Assembly, called the disclosure “quite intriguing” and mentioned she had not known before that Mr. Vince’s company provided electricity to City Hall.

She stated, “I can only suppose that the GLA has verified that this provides us with the most cost-effective option, but I appreciate the Daily Mail for bringing this to my attention so I can review it closely. I intend to raise inquiries regarding this matter and will thoroughly confirm that London residents are receiving good value.”

Ecotricity stated that there is no connection between its agreement to provide electricity to the GLA and Mr. Vince’s contributions to the Labour Party, with City Hall noting that Sir Sadiq was not involved in granting the contract.

The company started providing 100 percent of the electricity to the GLA following Sir Sadiq’s election in 2016.

In response to a previous mayoral inquiry, he said: “Starting from 1 April 2019, City Hall transitioned to 100 percent green energy, with renewable electricity provided by Ecotricity and green gas sourced from Corona.”

Back when City Hall stated the agreement was set to conclude in March 2020, it seems the deal has been extended annually ever since, with the latest contract now scheduled to end in March 2026.

Apart from contributing to Labour, Mr. Vince has provided £340,000 to the contentious environmental movement Just Stop Oil, along with supporting Extinction Rebellion and the vegetarian advocacy organization Animal Rising, which tried to disrupt the Grand National.

Nevertheless, in 2023, Mr. Vince stated that he would cease supporting Just Stop Oil, claiming additional demonstrations by the activist organization would be ‘unhelpful.’ Rather, he started contributing significant amounts to Labour before the previous year’s general election.

Sir Vince was a notable presence at the 2024 Labour Party gathering, delivering several media interviews and speeches, such as one during an event hosted by Labour’s Environmental Advocacy campaign.

He has also joined forces with Sir Sadiq on matters related to Net Zero and the environment, as the two individuals co-headlined the sustainability event Earthfest last year.

After Sir Sadiq won again in May of last year, Mr Vince shared a compilation video featuring both of them on social media with the caption ‘London has the Mayor it deserves and wants’.

He remarked: “Congratulations to Sadiq Khan (Mayor of London) and his team – excellent news for London and the nation.”

Sir Sadiq received a ‘Political Purpose Award’ last year for extending London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone during an event hosted by advocacy organization Nature 2030 along with Ecotricity.

Mr. Vince referred to the mayor as ‘inspirational’ during the event, where Environment Secretary Ed Miliband was also presented with an honor.

A representative from Ecotricity stated: ‘Ecotricity has been providing renewable energy to the public sector for thirty years — ever since our inception. It’s completely standard.’

Our agreement with the GLA has been extensively covered in the media over time — and was secured through a competitive selection procedure conducted by the local authority procurement group, LASER. It’s a minor contract and unrelated to any other matters.

A representative from the Office of the Mayor of London stated: ‘The mayor and his staff were not involved in or aware of this contract decision.’

‘An independent public sector energy purchasing firm was assigned by GLA officials to identify the most suitable supplier for the GLA’s needs.’
