Kalonzo Musyoka, the head of the Wiper party, has called for ODM and UDA to engage with the opposition prior to nominating candidates for the position of IEBC chairperson and commissioners.

Kalonzo observed that during his tenure as one of the co-chairs representing the opposition for the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO), they pledged to set up a trustworthy Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC). This would be achieved via an inclusive, clear, and responsible selection procedure.

A crucial aspect of this procedure involves consultations and agreements between government representatives from the ruling coalition and opposition figures prior to nominating individuals for the positions of IEBC chairperson and commissioners.

“In light of the altered political scenario, with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) establishing a government and engaging in unofficial tiesโ€”evidenced by an MOU publicly signed at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on March 7, 2025โ€”itโ€™s crucial to define who will be involved in this significant phase of dialogue and agreement,” stated the leader of Wiper.

In his correspondence with ex-Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Kalonzo expressed his conviction that UDA and ODM have united on one front and suggested they participate in talks within the Opposition to guarantee a fair and all-encompassing procedure.

“This stance is guided by the tenets of checks and balances, effective governance, and prudent public policy,” he said.

He argued that deviating from this method would be considered a one-sided political move benefiting the partisan goals of UDA and ODM, which could erode public faith and trust in the creation of the IEBC.

He stated that this method would likewise reinstate a harmful precedent that led to the contentious elections and post-election violence of 2007/08.

โ€œTo avoid any ambiguity, if the UDA/ODM Alliance proceeds with appointing the IEBC chairperson and commissioners without significant involvement from the Opposition, this move will be considered an effort to create a biased electoral commission,โ€ Kalonzo said.

The head of the Wiper movement stated that the opposition continues to firmly commit itself to strongly resist any efforts aimed at interfering with or weakening the sovereign decision-making power of the Kenyan citizens.

I thus insist that the UDA/ODM Alliance participate in substantive consultations and agreements with the Opposition to boost public trust in the IEBC. This strategy resonates with the constitutional values and principles outlined in the Kenyan Constitution of 2010, as well as the wider goals of electoral fairness. Additionally, this method adheres to the standards set forth by the Inter-Parliamentary Political Group (IPPG) in 1997, which played a crucial role in ensuring the legitimacy of the 2002 elections.
