A lot of us were raised on Weetabix. In contrast to the “fun”
cereals
Packed with chocolate and sugar, Weetabix often appeared comfortably mild. Advertised as “reliable good food,” something appearing so wholesome certainly tasted trustworthy.

However, the current emphasis on
ultra-processed foods
The inclusion of UPFs has sparked queries regarding the true healthiness of Weetabix. Despite this, it’s challengingโ€”but not impossibleโ€”to create your own wheat biscuits at home since these are considered minimally processed foods.

Making things even more perplexing, you can now select among various versions of Weetabix tailored to suit every palate and diet preferenceโ€”from those packed with proteins and made organically, to crispy flakes, mini bites enhanced with fruits and nuts, and even biscuit variations flavoured with chocolate. What ties them together is their knack for turning into concrete-like substances if you neglect rinsing out your bowl afterward. This phenomenon occurs because of the high starch levels present; these convert Weetabix into a sticky concoction once combined with water, akin to how paper pulp transforms during production. While this might not be appealing at first glance, rest assured that such stickiness wonโ€™t replicate itself within your body post-consumption.

“Keep in mind that your stomach and intestines use digestive enzymes and bacteria to break down food, so it doesnโ€™t dry out as it does when left in the bowl,” explains Emma Shafquat, a pediatric dietitian.

If you’re eager to steer clear of
ultra-processed foods
(UPFs), you might be cautious about foods with ingredients that aren’t typically found in your pantry.

Nevertheless, Rhiannon Lambert, a certified nutritionist and author of
The Science of Plant Based Nutrition
The founder of Rhitrition and Rhitrition Plus clinics notes that this shouldn’t be a reason for alarm. “Individuals frequently come across terms like ‘niacin,’ ‘riboflavin,’ and ‘folic acid’ on the backs of cereal boxes and become anxious about them being additional chemicals, perceived as artificial or dangerous. Nonetheless, these nutrients are essential for our wellbeing and are included in products like Weetabix to support overall nutritional balance.”

Shafquat concurs with this idea. She mentions, “Many children, particularly picky eaters, as well as adults, mostly women, might find fortified cereals beneficial for increasing their iron intake. Additionally, folic acid has been shown to decrease the likelihood of neural tube defects.”
pregnancy
, therefore, I believe it’s a good thing that Weetabix has additional nutrients added.”

Here are five reasons why Weetabix might be seen as a nutritious choice:
1. It contains whole grains which contribute to your daily fiber intake.
2. The product is often fortified with essential vitamins and minerals like B-vitamins and iron.
3. Its low-fat content makes it a good option for those watching their calorie count.
4. Being naturally sugar-free, it helps manage sweetener consumption when you add toppings of your choosing.
5. Consuming Weetabix regularly may help improve heart health due to its high-fiber composition.

Based on what the specialists say, Weetabix can be deemed nutritious due to these factors:

1. It contains minimal sugar

“The amount of sugar in Weetabix is very low, making it easier to control blood sugar levels. This is crucial for maintaining energy, particularly for kids. If you send your child off to school after eating a bowl of sweetened cereal, their blood glucose levels will spike rapidly and subsequently drop sharply, leading to feelings of hunger and difficulty concentrating,” explains Lambert.

2. It contains plenty of fiber.

“This aids in maintaining a healthy digestion system and keeps you feeling satiated for extended periods,” explains Shafquat.

3. Itโ€™s fortified

โ€œWe know that the main source of iron in our diets comes from fortified cereals such as Weetabix,โ€ says Lambert. โ€œHowever, here in the UK, if a product is labelled โ€˜organicโ€™ it cannot be fortified with any nutrients such as vitamins and minerals.โ€

Interestingly, this provides the conventional Weetabix with an advantage over its organic counterpart when considering nutrition.

4. It has reduced sodium content.

โ€œEach biscuit contains just 0.10 grams of salt,โ€ explains Shafquat. In the UK, the recommendation for adults is to eat less than 6 grams of salt daily, which means this amount would be relatively insignificant.

5. Itโ€™s convenient

Weetabix can be swiftly made using milk or a non-dairy substitute and garnished with fruit for extra nutrients and diversity,” explains Lambert. “Its simple preparation process makes it ideal for hectic mornings when time is scarce.

However, is Weetabix considered a UPF?

When did you last include malted barley extract in your grocery list? This ingredient isnโ€™t commonly utilized by home chefs, which is precisely what makes Weetabix fall under the category of Ultra-Processed Food (UPF).

Lambert clarifies: “Even though Weetabix has a simple ingredient list, it is classified as an Ultra-Processed Food (UPF) because of the addition of sugar and specific processed components such as malted barley extract. Nevertheless, not all UPFs are alike. For example, traditional versions of Weetabix offer a substantial amount of whole grains, fiber, and vital vitamins and minerals, supporting a healthy diet when consumed appropriately. This differentiation underscores the importance of avoiding blanket judgments about the healthiness of all UPFs.”

Shafquat concurs: “I wouldn’t rank Weetabix high among the food items I’d steer clear of since they fall under the category of UPFs.”

Verdict: Is Weetabix healthy?

Check out the nutrition details, and Original Weetabix meets all the criteria for healthy eating, getting a complete set of green signals as per the traffic light labeling scheme.

Nevertheless, not all variations of Weetabix are alike when it comes to healthiness โ€” certain kinds contain significantly more sugars than others. To illustrate, we find that flavored variants like chocolate, banana, and fruit and nut mini versions possess considerably elevated levels of sugar (with the chocolate variant reaching up to 8.1 grams per biscuit). Interestingly enough, choices marketed towards health enthusiasts such as Weetabix Protein do not fare better compared to traditional flavors.

“These cereals offer an excellent means to meet a significant part of your daily protein requirements during breakfast; however, this comes with the trade-off of having slightly elevated sugar levels compared to traditional Weetabix,” clarifies Lambert.

Our specialists concur that beginning your day with a bowl of Weetabix is a nutritious choice โ€“ however, this holds true solely for the original versions.

Lambert concludes: “I would opt for the original Weetabix or Oatibix as they provide a well-balanced nutrition without much additional sugar, which makes them preferable.”

Ways to enhance your bowl of Weetabix

Certainly, Weetabix might seem bland at times, yet Lambert offers these ideas to enhance both its flavor and nutritional valueโ€”making every bite more enjoyable.

  • Include a tablespoon of nut butter: ”

    Try almond or
    peanut butter
, to boost the unsaturated fat content. Combined with the high fiber levels in Weetabix, this aids in slowing down the digestion and absorption of sugar, leading to a steadier blood glucose reaction, keeping you satiated for extended periods.”

  • Sprinkle on some nuts:

    โ€œ
    Nuts
contain plenty of polyphenols and antioxidants, which may aid in shielding your body from oxidative stress and enhancing general well-being.โ€

  • Top with fresh fruit:

Blueberries, bananas, or apples bring natural sweetness, vitamins, and fiber, boosting the overall nutrition of your morning meal. Combining Weetabix with a freshly squeezed orange is especially advantageous as oranges are rich in vitamin C. Since Weetabix is enriched with iron, consuming them together aids in better absorption.

  • Add it to yoghurt:

โ€œCrush some Weetabix and scatter the pieces over a yogurt bowl. This boosts the protein content, helping you feel fuller for a longer time.โ€
