On Tuesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered six commercial banks to provide the Inspector-General of Police with complete financial information and transaction history related to Omoyele Sowore, the editor-in-chief of Sahara Reporters, covering the period from January 2024 up to now.

Judge Emeka Nwite issued the directive after receiving a one-sided request from the IGP’s legal representative, Wisdom Madaki.

Authorities stated that Sowore is being investigated for suspected terrorist funding, money laundering, and various fraudulent acts. Approximately 26 banking accounts connected to him, such as those managed by Sahara Reporters Media Foundation and the African Action Congress, are allegedly being examined.

The motion titled FHC/ABJ/CS/1757/2025 lists Sowore and Sahara Reporters Media Foundation as the first and second respondents, respectively, with United Bank for Africa Plc, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, Opay Digital Services Ltd, Moniepoint, and Kuda Microfinance Bank Ltd added as third through eighth respondents.

The authorities requested “a court directive compelling UBA Plc, GTB Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, Opay Digital Services Ltd, Moniepoint, and Kuda Microfinance Bank Ltd to provide the applicant, via the IGP Monitoring Unit, with the account setup documentation/mandate card along with officially verified copies of bank statements showing transactions and account details for both incoming and outgoing funds from January 2024 up until now.”

In a supplementary sworn statement, Bassey Ibrahim from the Force CID Legal Department claimed that intelligence documents connected the accounts to terrorist funding and money laundering activities, including suspected financial backing from international collaborators. He stated that obtaining access to these records was essential for current inquiries.

Judge Nwite, in his decision, supported the applicant’s position.

“I have heard the arguments presented by the applicant’s legal representatives and have reviewed the sworn statements provided. In my opinion, and accordingly, the application is valid. The requested relief is therefore approved as sought,” stated the judge.
