Home Minister Lekhak Addresses Government’s Role in Tinkune Incident

On April 2nd, in Nepal, the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee instructed Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak to provide clarity regarding the government’s involvement and duties concerning the theft, destruction, and fire incidents that occurred during the pro-monarchy demonstration on March 28th.

On Wednesday, during the committee’s gathering at Singha Durbar, legislators from both governing and opposing factions questioned the Home Minister about the casualties and damages resulting from the protests.

Chairperson Ram Hari Khatiwada has verified that Minister Lekhak will be attending Friday’s session to deliver an extensive report regarding the incident.

The Chief Whip of the CPN (Maoist Center), Hitraj Pandey, criticized the administration for not managing the circumstances at Tinkune effectively.

He denounced the authorities for failing to implement effective measures, even though they had the ability to stop the surge in violence.

Pandey challenged how individuals could trust that the authorities, who were unable to apprehend anyone even when they had cordoned off the region initially, would manage to do so now. Additionally, he charged the administration with intentionally permitting protest leader Durga Prasai to evade capture, which has sparked worries regarding the police’s involvement.

Legislators have called upon the Home Minister to deliver a detailed account regarding the administration’s readiness as well as the extent of damage inflicted by the protests. The committee views this issue with grave concern.
