Hip-Hop Isn’t Cool? Meet 12 Justice & Lee Chan Hyuk’s Struggles

The rapper Justis faced backlash after criticizing AKMU member Lee Chan-hyuk.

On the 26th, Mnet’s “Show Me the Money12” unveiled a rap clip featuring Judith titled “VVS 2025 Remix.”

In the leaked video, Judith delivered an aggressive rap featuring lines such as “HIPHOP is ruined? Then leave. To someone who began with passion, this is sacred.” It also included references like “The Weeknd compatible urakai parkuri,” along with phrases such as “Joke on you, I show my smile Murakami. You conceal your plagiarism, while I strip down and wear fresh attire,” which sparked debate.

Internet users theorized that Justis subtly criticized Lee Chan-hyuk via his songwriting.

Previously, Lee Chan-hyuk made an appearance on the YouTube channel “Limousine Service,” where his statement about hip-hop no longer seeming as cool as before attracted significant attention. In 2022, the line “Hip-hop isn’t always cool” from his performance on “Show Me the Money 10” sparked widespread online memes.

Furthermore, Lee Chan-hyuk mentioned that upon releasing his solo album titled ‘Error,’ he encountered the musical style and concepts associated with The Weeknd, whom he has long respected. As Lee Chan-hyuk is the sole artist matching both of these criteria, it is widely considered true that Justis made an indirect reference to him.

“This” represents an exclusive heritage of hip-hop legends. However, Judith’s reaction to Dislap is indifferent.

Internet users commented, “‘It’s not about Lee Chan-hyuk specifically, but it’s accurate that hip-hop—once considered stylish from Drunk Tiger up until Illyne—is now seen as negative. It’s also true that as more rappers try to differentiate themselves through elements beyond just their rap abilities, they end up feeling overlooked.’ ‘That’s why hip-hop gets labeled as both trendy and dull,’ ‘The key point is that Lee Chan-hyuk became the top choice during the Show Me era. He then remarked sarcastically, ‘Hip-hop is destroyed.’”

Several people also brought up the topic of military service. Lee Chan-hyuk chose to join the Marines willingly and finished his required service. In contrast, details about Judith’s military status remain unclear. Some claim she received a “military deferment.” Internet users questioned, “Why do rappers get so many mental health exemptions when hip-hop is supposed to be powerful?” and “Did Lee Chan-hyuk actually write a military-themed song during his time in the Marines?”

Show Me the Money is South Korea’s inaugural hip-hop competition series and one of the longest-running survival shows. Many artists such as Loco, Bobby, BewhY, and Lil Boy were referred to as “celebrity guests” when they appeared on the show. Nevertheless, as the seasons progressed, instead of uncovering fresh talent, the program began focusing more on established rappers, leading critics to comment that it had shifted away from genuine human connections in hip-hop.

As a reply, the production crew aimed to discover a fresh innovation by broadening the eligibility zone, without restricting genre, profession, or origin for this Season 12.

The show “Show Me the Money 12” will continue accepting applications from rappers up to September 26.
