Two alert policemen broke into a flaming home to rescue a resting woman when they noticed smoke during a regular patrol.

On August 13, Police Officers Gregg Cartwright and Jamie Walker were traveling through Sutton-in-Ashfield when they observed dense dark smoke rising high into the air.

Aware of the risk to people and belongings, the two hurried to check and found a fire burning in a backyard, easily seen from the home’s greenhouse.

In the body camera video, the two police officers are audible coughing due to the smoke as they yell ‘get out’ mere seconds before breaking the window.

PC Walker quickly ran onto the premises to escort the woman to safety, as PC Cartwright took hold of a fire extinguisher and subdued the flames before they had a chance to grow worse.

Owing to the bravery of the police, everyone remained unharmed.

Officer PC Cartwright from the Mansfield Rota 3 response unit stated, “We were aware someone was trapped inside the structure, so we acted as any other law enforcement officer would have.”

There wasnโ€™t much to consider. We simply broke in, got the woman outside, and then did our best to deal with the fire.

His coworker, PC Walker, said: “In terms of responding to incidents, you never know what you’ll encounter, as was the case here. We were simply passing by when we noticed some smoke, so decided to investigate.”

That’s essentially response control, truly. One moment you’re dispatched for a task, and the next you stumble upon something like this.

The property owner was sleeping only a few feet away from the fire when the police came – and their quick choice could have protected her life.

Head of Police Officer Paul Hennessy commended the personnel for their quick and altruistic efforts.

He stated, “Although I have no doubt both officers view their actions as standard policing, this minimizes the remarkable impact they had.”

If you think about how near the flames were to the house and the fact that the owner was asleep only a few feet away, their action could very possibly have saved her life as well as those of others.

Officers Cartwright and Walker were on duty when they saw the smoke and quickly responded upon realizing the hazardous scenario unfolding.

The quick reaction and the composure they displayed in entering the location and, among themselves, ensuring the woman was taken out safely and putting out the fire, warrants significant recognition.
