On April 2, Nepal’s Department of Commerce, Supply, and Consumer Protection stepped up its surveillance efforts in the markets. As part of this initiative, they instructed seven companies to submit their documentation to the department during inspections.

The department discovered breaches of the Consumer Protection Act from 2075 and the Consumer Protection Rules established in 2076, subsequently providing essential directives and measures. In this process, the operations of one company have been halted temporarily, while another directive requires seven additional firms to submit their documentation for review.

Several companies faced disruptions, with Spark Auto Care Pvt Ltd (Kathmandu Metropolis-8) having its sales halted and being asked to provide necessary paperwork. Likewise, businesses like Gaurang Sarij Pvt Ltd (Kathmandu-31), CG Motors Pvt Ltd (Lalitpur Metropolis-2), Asian Biscuit and Confectionery Pvt Ltd (Biratnagar Metropolis-9), Season IT (Kathmandu-22), Urban Gears (Kathmandu-31), and Gavino Fashion Wear (Kathmandu-31) were also told to furnish their documentation to the authorities.

The department has emphasized that it will continue market monitoring and take necessary actions to maintain a clean and competitive market, while protecting consumer rights. Department Director-General Kumar Dahal said that businesses must fully comply with legal provisions to ensure consumer rights, adding that the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) is mandatory on all products with immediate effect.

He added, “Except for items sold based on their weight or size, every product should show the Maximum Retail Price (MRP). Implementing this will lead to a more open and honest marketplace where MRPs would become obligatory for everything ranging from minor purchases up to major ones like automobiles.”
