A person who won £1 million from the lottery gave credit to his deceased father for his achievement by choosing his birthdate and passing date as the winning numbers.

Darren McGuire, aged 46, hailing from Bolton, learned about his amazing victory right before embarking on a family trip to Cornwall. He says the remainder of the week felt like “a complete haze.”

The gas technician stated: “‘Dad’s’ birthday (March 22, 1948) and the day he passed away (September 21, 2011) turned us into millionaires — thanks, Dad.”

He mentioned that the life-altering fortune was also hinted at by two roses in their garden that unexpectedly blossomed that day — following four years without any growth.

On the day of the lottery, two rose plants in our yard, which had remained completely inactive for nearly four years, unexpectedly blossomed and yielded a flawless red flower.

“To me, it felt like a message from my dad that today was the one—and it definitely was. It’s crazy,” he said to the
BBC
.

Darren mentioned that he plans to utilize his newfound wealth to improve his working schedule, since he frequently works every day of the week.

He and his girlfriend Laura Waites, with whom he has been in a relationship for almost two decades, also hope to get married at last.

A 46-year-old stated, “We had planned to marry many years ago, but then Laura became pregnant, and we relocated.”

I also frequently work every day of the week as a gas technician for a housing association based in Bolton—a role I truly enjoy—so between everything else, we never managed to get married.

‘However, with this win under our belts we’re hoping to get married in real style sometime soon.’

One day in the future, Darren might launch his own venture, yet he isn’t eager to do so right now. He mentions that him and Laura are simply ordinary individuals; they aren’t at all extravagant.

The pair have already purchased a new vehicle, a Volvo CX90, swapping out the “shaky” car that Laura confesses she disliked.

Meanwhile, their two children have a few requests of their own.

“One requested a PlayStation 5, while the other prefers to go on a shopping trip for clothing and sneakers. Let’s see what we can arrange,” said Laura, who serves as a receptionist.

She added: ‘We love our house, the area we already live in and the people in it. We will be looking to build an extension and expand into the roof to give the whole family more room.

We’re also planning to transform the basement into a bar and entertainment area. We enjoy hosting parties, and we’ll certainly be commemorating our victory multiple times!

A seven-day vacation in Spain is also being considered, during which the couple will take the opportunity ‘to develop strategies and reach conclusions regarding their future’.
